Ok, so here I was thinking I had a few months reprieve before the mania descends that is known simply to use parents of young girls as "the third one". For anyone who has no idea of what I speak, I am of course referring to the third instalment of "High school musical 3", but no… the people at Disney have of course had other ideas. Not only do I now have to get into a fist fight with some woman in Woolworths on Christmas eve to procure the latest "must have" HSM product, I know have the film I will now reviews merchandise to locate, take out a loan to afford and finally fight for, all in the name of love!
The film I will now review is "Camp Rock"
This is the cheaper less well made version of HSM, starring the latest cheesy American boy band offering named "The Jonas Brothers". As with a lot of these films and programmes I am never to sure whether these bands were famous before the films or the films actually propelled their careers, take Hannah Montana for example, now Miley Cyrus is breaking into our charts as well, oh but that is so another review!
The basic premise for this film is set around one of those wonderful summer camps that the Americans seem to ship their kids out to, this one is of course a music camp, specialising in…. well everything!
The main character Mitchie (played by the very beautiful Demi Lovato), is an exceptionally talented young girl whose is determined that she be sent to Camp Rock, after ten minutes of her mother giving reasons why she can't go she of course decides or at least gets offered a catering job at the afore mentioned camp, well I didn't say it was going to be a thinking persons film did I!
After their arrival Mitchie seems to gravitate towards the "baddie", a mean spirited young girl called Tess, who along with her "click" is considered top dog. Eager to impress Tess, Mitchie makes up a fictional and much more exciting mother than she has, after her revelations or at least lies she is inducted into the click, come on you know how that one is going to end! As with all of these type of films there is a love interest, the person in question for this film is the rather cool Joe Jonas, who plays Shane. He is the supposed lead singer of a fictional boy band, also made up of brothers (the rest of the band are in real life made up of Joe's brothers Nick and Kevin, all equally cool!). Due to Shane being far too big for his boots, the rest of the band think it would do him good to remember his roots, which just happens to be at Camp Rock, which is where he was discovered. He returns as a very reluctant instructor, spurred on by his long suffering and permanent Camp Rock instructor Uncle Brown, who may I say is the most annoying character I have ever come across, he Is supposedly Australian, but sports the worst accent I have ever heard, he at times almost becomes a characture of himself.
I won't give any more detail, though most of you who is familiar with the HSM films can probably guess the ending, I know I did, and yet my daughter was and is enthralled!
The only thing I can attribute it to is the music. The acting is completely over the top, the storyline is passable, some of the actors are not that easy on the eye, the so called dancers look like I do when trying to strut my funky stuff after a few too many sherbets and yet the music seems to hold it all together.
The songs are catchy, memorable and all with easy lyrics that stick after hearing them once. There is a good mix of ballads, funk, dance all encouraging the kids (once they start playing!), to strut there funky stuff. As I said the dancers are not that great, that is a slight exaggeration. The main characters are not good dancers, with the new "best friend" character, that seems to appear halfway through the film (Caitlyn), looking like she is having some sort of fit every time the music comes on, however the extras are all body poppers and perform some pretty impressive moves, the best example of this is when an impromptu song starts in the eating area, which involves all the girls to "shake there funky thang!", and all the lads to perform a dance that is supposed to entice them to be their date by doing multiple leaps over the dinner tables!
As you may have gathered I wasn't that impressed with the film, but my daughter was really impressed. I feel that I am now getting a little jaded with the whole idea of these sort of films, when it was my day you just had the film and that was it (or at least that was the official line from my mother!), nowadays there is the film, and before you have even had chance to watch the film there is a multi million pound merchandise selection, with enough stuff to make any parent that earns less than £100,000 a year shudder!
The thing that I do like though about these films is the "message" that runs through the film, this film promoted the fact that you should always follow your dream, cheats never prosper and if you look and sing like Demi Lovato (Mitchie), you will always get the guy! Well Durrr! These are always great for the younger kids, they take everything in the film a s gospel. Very often my daughter will be talking about what I think is a friend, then I will ask who she's talking about and realise its someone from the film!
This is a film only review, though the dvd is available from any good stockists around the 1st December, just in time for Christmas!
This (like the first 2 HSM films), was premiered on the Disney channel, they even had a countdown clock for the last week, the kids down the school were crackling with anticipation on the Friday it was premiered, with nothing bar the film being discussed!
So for all the parents of HSM fans out there, this is a definite addition to there musicals collection, just watch out for the merchandise!
Advantages: Teens will like it! Disadvantages: Does'nt Feature much of the Jonas Bros!

Camp Rock was the 2008 Disney Channel Original Movie, and was shown on the Disney Channel in the Summer of last year, and its now a huge success. The show is about a young girl, Mitchie Torres. She has been fantasizing about going to Camp Rock, a music related Summer Camp all year, but her family can't afford the fee's and so she has to get used to the idea that its just not going to happen to her. I was a bit dubious about this as i thought it might just be a High School Musical spin off and a way for Disney to make even more money! But after listening to the music and watching the film I have to say it was great I thought (by the name) that it would be way to "rocky" for my daughter to enjoy but the lyrics are quite upbeat more pop with a twist than full on rock It still gets you dancing around the room and if you have the excuse of children ...

What matters is how well it's done, and Disney does a lot of things right. It's multicultural. Parents are portrayed as people. The intrapersonal dramas are small enough so viewers will understand them. (New York Daily News, 31/10/2008)
It's really a great movie, like a modern-day version of an old Judy Garland-Mickey Rooney picture in which the kids put on a show that improves the lives of all who see it. (New York Post, 28/10/2008)
DVD Description
Teen pop idols the Jonas Brothers make their feature debut in Disney's CAMP ROCK, a Cinderella tale with a rock 'n' roll twist. Golden-voiced, working-class beauty Mitchie Torres (Demi Lovato) has only one desire: to spend the summer at Camp Rock, a prestigious musical retreat for budding stars. The wish is granted when her mom gets a job as the camp's cook, but in order to join the ranks of the popular girls, she must obscure her less-than-regal roots. As the summer wears on, Mitchie is torn between who she is and who she's pretending to be, an artistic crisis of identity that endears her to the similarly-conflicted boy band superstar, Shane Gray (Joe Jonas). United by the desire to sing from the heart, Mitchie and Shane help one another discover their true selves, and together pave an honest road to pop success.
