...This is an updated version of the classic farce La Cage aux Folles relocating the story to MiamiBeach. It stars Robin Williams and Nathan Lane who play a gay couple called Armand and Albert who are forced to play it straight for the sake of Armands son who has just got engaged. Lane really is over the top in outrageous drag queen gear while Robin Williams is unusually subdued by his standards. ...'t compete with it's original, French version "La Cage Aux Folles." This is true that "La Cage..." is the funnier of the two, but it doesn't detract from "The Birdcage" at all. Plus, an English version of "La Cage..." is so much funnier than a version in French with subtitles. In general, "The Birdcage" is a wonderful film that commands viewings again and again.... ...Recent remakes prove such efforts are usually a big waste of money. Think of Luc Besson's La Femme Nikita and then John Badham's Point Of No Return. Fortunately Jane Fonda's hope of redoing Pedro Almodovar's Woman On The Verge Of A Nervous Breakdown for American audiences petered out before it began. Therefore, its with some relief that Mike Nichols' The Birdcage is pretty darn entertaining, Fortunately, with Elaine May's screenplay as a point of departure, the Americanized version of the 1978 French hit, La Cage Aux Folles (which itself spawned two sequels and a Broadway musical), delivers laughs at the expense of a "right" agenda. May reunites with her old 1950's comedy team partner, Mike Nichols, who has hit a bit of a career impasse lately. Wolf was an interesting failure and Regarding Henry and Postcards From The Edge were murky... Read review
