Calendar Girls, 2003, Rating 12A, Runtime 108 mins
The Story:
Calendar Girls is a great film that combines a serious subject with the art if comedy, this film will make you laugh and cry, and at some points cry with laughter. This Film is based on the women of the Rylstone and District Women's Institute near Skipton, North Yorkshire. In keeping with the original story the film is set in the village of Knapely, Yorkshire England and follows the story of two friends Annie and Chris, who are members of the WI (Women's Institute) they have been friends for years and don't really enjoy the WI but go because it was what theirs mothers wanted them to do. Every year the WI make a calendar to raise money, Annie's husband had died of Leukaemia and after some inspiration from her son's dirty magazines Chris comes up with a idea to raise some money for The Leukaemia Trust.
My Thoughts:
This story touches the heart in so many ways, it covers so many areas, friendship, loss of a love one, older women embracing life, all together showing you that with love and determination you can achieve so much. The acting in this film is outstanding Helen Mirren gives an amazing performance as Chris, and with Julie Walters playing Annie the film was bound to be a success from the start. They both compliment each other brilliantly and light up the screen every time they appear on it. Hats off to them and all the women in the film for getting their kit off, I am half their age and I don't think could of done it! I think they all looked beautiful! This is a great film and I would recommend it o everyone, I think this film appeals to a wide range of ages and with such a brilliant story and acting it is one not to be missed.
Actors/Characters:
Miss January: Helen Mirren plays Chris Harper, Chris has been friends with Annie for years and is very upset when Annie's husband John passes away. She wants to help Annie is raise funds for a new sofa for the waiting room at the local hospital. Chris has an idea for a calendar but is known for her unsuccessful ventures in the past so everyone has their doubts about it. Determined to make it a success Chris puts every thing on hold for the calendar including her husband and son. Dame Helen Mirren is brilliant actress and gives a great performance as brassy Chris Harper, she has starred in wide array of films including Elizabeth 1 and The Queen.
Miss February: Julie Walters plays Annie Clarke, Annie and John are a happy couple who love each other dearly, when John is diagnosed with Leukaemia, Annie's world comes crashing down, and when he dies Annie feels the need to give something back. After spending so long at the hospital Annie decides she wants to buy a new sofa for the relatives room. After to discussing the idea with best friend Chris she is pleased when her friend comes up with a great if not rather strange idea to raise the money. Julie Walters gives a sensitive performance as bereaved Annie Clarke, Julie Walters has been in so many films including Sister My Sister, Harry Potter films, Driving Lessons to name but a few.
Some of the other months:
Also posing as the women from the WI includes actresses, Linda Bassett who plays Cora, Annette Crosbie as Jessie, Penelope Wilton as Ruth and Celia Imrie as Celia to name a few.
