I won't lie to you, Dear Reader, I was dreading this one. I mean I really was. It's one of those films you get dragged to see by the sort of person it appeals to. You know, in the same way some films have a general appeal, others only raise the eyebrow of interest on the faces of a specific few. By which I mean chicks, basically. And not young ones, at that.
I was surprised. And pleasantly so.
Set in the breathtaking splendour of Yorkshire, Calendar Girls is probably the closest we've come to the next 'The Full Monty' in years - not least because of the shedding of clothes. It's not nearly as funny, but it has every bit as much heart. And, much to my own disgust, I loved it. But then there's really nothing here to dislike. It's warm, it's spirited and, more than anything, it's utterly, uttely harmless.
My first gripe: it does lack pace. While it never seemed to drag, and it didn't feel over-long, I did walk out thinking that it might be more suited to the small screen. It's a good film, but it would have been a far better TV drama.
My only other bone with it is that the sub-plot involving Chris's (Mirren) teenage son seems to be forgotten by the end. One minute it's there, the next it's dismissed with a casual aside. Pity, cos that lad needed a slap round the head. What is it with teenagers and this whole business of hating their parents and finding them embarrassing? Do they honestly think their miserable, spotty faces are exactly a joy to behold for us grownups?
So yes, I have once again been forced to eat humble pie. To be honest, I'm giving second thoughts to trusting my own judgement anymore. Films that look good turn out crap, and the ones I otherwise wouldn't see without a gun in my back turn out to be surprisingly enjoyable. Sure, go and see it, you have my blessing. Helen Mirren's a fox, by the way. I can't believe nobody told me this before.
