This 1953 musical tells the story of Calamity Jane (Doris Day) & her romance with Wild Bill Hickock (Howard Keel).
The film starts with a lively song 'The Deadwood stage', which sees Calamity arrive back in Deadwood from Chicago. Calamity goes on to tell the people of Deadwood all about Chicago - hence the song Just Blew In From The Windy City . This really shows Doris Day's voice and dancing skills off and is one of my fave bits of the film (especially when she goes up in an elevator!! - watch th efilm to see what i mean).
Anyway, back to the story.......Calamity promises the men that she will go back to Chicago and bring Miss Adelaide Adams to perform for them. This is after a female entertainer who dresses as a woman doesn't go down too well with the locals (an hyserical performance by Dick wessen as Francis Fryer). So, off Calamity goes to get Adelaide Adams (played by Gale Robbins). However, Calamity mistakenly brings back Katie Brown who pretends to be Adelaide Adams. Katie gets the nerves and everyone ends up booing - however when Calamity talk the boys in to giving her a chance she does a fabulous performance and becomes loved by everyone, including Lieutenant Danny Gilmartin (Philip Carey) who just so happens to be the love of Calamity's life......
Katie moves in with Calamity and her run down house but 'a Woman's Tocuh' soon changes this! Danny and Bill Hickock both fall for Katie and gamble on who can take her to the formal ball. Danny wins and so Bill takes Calamity to the ball. Katies dresses Calamity up for the ball and she looks stunning (this is Dori Day after all she can't be a tom boy for the whole film!) and I always love seeing the look on everyone's faces when they see her. They keep saying 'that can't be Calamity'. At the ball, Calamity sees Katie and Danny kissing and warns Katie to get out of town.
Katie leaves but Calamity realises that she doesn't want her to go - as she doesn't love Danny after all: she has a Secret Love - Wild Bill Hickock. To fin dout what happens next, you'll have to watch the film.
This really is a great film - probably my favourite as I've watched it regularly since i was a little girl. There are some fantastic songs, such as Oscar Winning SECRET LOVE & The Blackhills of Dakota. If you enjoy musicals, this is a must see! I can't recommend it enough!!
The DVD has some good bonusses such as BONUS FOOTAGE and the original theatrical trainer. It is now widely available and can be bought for £6.99 at www.blah.com.
