DVD Description
In this film adaptation of George Bernard Shaw's lavish epic, the venerable Julius Caesar (Claude Rains) meets Cleopatra (Vivian Leigh) under the Sphinx in ancient Egypt. Although the Roman Emperor finds her childishly innocent, she is capable of seizing the throne from her brother and cold-bloodedly committing murder. Captivated by her youthful beauty, Caesar sets out to refine Cleopatra's rough edges into a more royal demeanor, befitting a queen. Even in the midst of his campaign to conquer Egypt, he finds the time to teach her about life and politics.
Advantages: Simply the best carry on Disadvantages: none
...This one is probably the Carry On Teams finest hour, a spot on spoof of the huge flop that was Cleopatra starring Burton/Taylor a few years earlier.
Basic plot has Jim Dale & Kenneth Connor as Ancient Britons being taken into slavery and arriving in Rome. With Sid James as Mark Anthony, a very sexy Amanda Barrie as Cleopatra and Kenneth Williams as Caesar the casting is spot on
Film is very funny and contains the classic line as uttered by Williams Caesar which Im sure you know by now.
If the Carry Ons had continued with these style of send ups of which Carry On Henry was probably the last they may have lasted longer but with Girls.Convience,Abroad,Behind and England the quality got really bad towards the end of the series, but forget about that in this film you will see them at their best and how we remember them
Once again considering...

Advantages: Great production and direction shown off well in this widescreen version Disadvantages: none!
...as Cleopatra and Burton as Mark Antony and there are great supporting performances by Rex Harrison as Caesar, Martin Landau, Roddy McDowell, George Cole, Francesca Annis and Michael Hordern, to name but a few. THe most expensive film ever made, at the time, I simply adore every indulgent minute of it. This particular version is just the original film though (I have another version with an even longer director's cut, but this is quite long enough, thank you!)
If you've never seen this film then I strongly recommend it. This version has a few rather dated extras but nothing worth bothering with. This DVD is worth buying though as the film is such a great visual trat having it on a great big FST on widescreen is just what it deserves!...

Advantages: Some good performances and scenes Disadvantages: Overall sketchy, both in production and history
..., puts in a much more dynamic performance, however brief; some may recall Harris as the wise emperor Marcus Aurelius in ‘Gladiator’ a few years prior to this production, a very different role indeed from the ambitious, capricious and over-emotional Sulla. Christopher Walken as Cato also turns in an almost over-the-top performance (Cato and Cicero seem to be a combined character here, in some respects). Christopher Noth plays Pompey, but does so at extremes – he is either flat and ineffective, or overly emotional and ineffective. Noth has done good work elsewhere, but this is not one of his better pieces.
The female characters in this production are largely marginalized; even the famous Cleopatra/Caesar affair in minimized. While the role of Cleopatra is often overplayed in the Caesar story, it does have a decided role. Also, the role...
