Eli Roth makes an auspicious debut with CABIN FEVER. Taking an otherwise traditional set up for a horror film, Roth infuses it with enough energy and originality to make it feel...
more...completely fresh. Five friends, just finished with college finals, head for a cabin in the woods to party and embrace their newfound freedom. There's the cute but uptight Paul (Rider Strong), who yearns for pretty lifelong platonic friend Karen (Jordan Ladd); the attractive, but slightly stupid couple Jeff (Joey Kern) and Marcy (Cerina Vincent); and the brute jock, Bert (James DeBello). While shooting squirrels in the woods, Bert accidentally nicks a man, who appears to be suffering from a disgusting disease. Bert returns to the cabin, choosing not to share this information with the gang. But later that night, when the man knocks on their door, the beast is unleashed. Unlike most horror films which make the horror gruesomely visible, the evil in CABIN FEVER is invisible--and highly contagious. And when Karen begins to show signs of contamination, the bond between these close friends begins to unravel. Roth's blackly comic directorial debut shows clear influence from the early films of Sam Raimi (THE EVIL DEAD) and Peter Jackson (BRAINDEAD).

I am generally a bit of a scaredy cat when it comes to horrors, so naturally when I saw the powerful and intense images from cabin fever flash on the cinema screen a couple of months ago, I vowed not to put myself through such 'termoil'.

My MUM dragged me along...the first five minutes of the film passed and eventually I convinced myself it was safe to come out from beneath my coat until I felt something trully scary was about to occur. I have to say I eventually sat on my coat...because nothing very scary really did happen!(Gore is not that scary to me.)

Basically the title gives it away....'Cabin Fever' and that's it...a bunch of kids get a fever in a cabin(well it's a bit more gruesome than that) somewhere in outback America. I guess the trailers in the months before the release did all they could to hype it up and I have to say I expected something completely different.

I do have to say it was a different type of horror plot than what we are used to with other teen horrors such as Scream, and there was plenty of gore to keep even Michael Myers happy. The lusty ones get an eyefull of breast and some interesting bedroom behaviour in this film for sure!(what is with the 'finger' scene in a 15 film?)

Overall I was left thinking 'what was that about?' mixed with...'I'd rather watch National Geographic to get all the information I need on illnesses-thanks.'

Not forgetting of course the cliff hanger of the film....'what was in that box????!' (I guess we will never know because the keeper received a timely screwdriver in his ear!)
