This is a dark and wonderful film. It revolves around Sally Bowles (Liza Minelli) and her life of working in a cabaret bar and her life outside the cabaret in 1930's Berlin. It also deals with the rise of Nazism in Germany. An English scholar, Brian, comes to Berlin to teach English and moves in to one of the rooms in Sally Bowles' building. The two fall for each other but Sally is unfaithful, and we find out that Brian has also been unfaithful with the same man. Sally reveals that she is pregnant but she doesn't know who the father is, but Brian comforts her and says that it doesn't matter and he wants the baby no matter what, and says that she should come back to England with him. Sally realises she couldn't lead that kind of life and has an abortion. Then Brian leaves to go back to England and Sally stays Berlin. Great, great, great songs! And Liza Minelli's acting in this is well deserving of her Oscar win of best actress in a leading role. The choreography is also brilliant, I really enjoyed watching the performances in the Cabaret. This is quite different from other musicals as all of the songs (apart from one) are part of a show in the Kit Kat Club, not people just bursting in to song, I thought that was really good and original for a musical. The other thing I liked about this musical is that it is quite dark. It is not all song and dance, it shows the realities of life in Germany at that time. The dvd has some really good extras on it, including a songs menu, which allows you to click on a song and it will go to that song in the movie (great if you really like a particular song!) There is also a Kit Kat Club Memory Gallery with pictures from the cast and creators which is really nice. There is also lots of production notes and trivia. I recommend this film, it is a nice change from all the other musicals and I think it's one of the best musicals I have seen.
