This revisionist Western comedy, which served as the prototype of the buddy film for years to come, stars Paul Newman and Robert Redford as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,...
more...respectively. At the turn of the 20th century, they've become notorious for the skill with which they and their colleagues, the Hole in the Wall gang, rob banks and trains. But their last few jobs have been botched, and after Butch and Sundance return from a brief vacation, Harvey Logan (Ted Cassidy) challenges Butch's leadership. After comically snuffing the rebellion, Butch agrees with one of the gang on risking the double robbery of a Union Pacific payroll train. Despite blowing up the entire baggage car, they survive the first stage of the robbery and spend some down time with Sundance's girl, schoolteacher Etta Place (Katharine Ross). But after hitting the train on its return trip, Butch and Sundance are relentlessly pursued by a posse of world-class lawmen planted on board by the wily railroad president. Realizing that their days are numbered, the outlaws head for Bolivia. The film, which launched the career of Redford and boosted George Roy Hill's to another level, owes its ineffable charm to the terrific chemistry between the two stars, to William Goldman's warm and witty screenplay, and to a director capable of walking a tightrope between the comic and the elegaic.

You know what? It just doesn't hurt to laugh anymore. You've got to love these guys, facing who knows what odds to become some of the most notorious bank robbers of all time. They never had a cent, everything they tried was botched, broken or wrong. They shouldn't be role models but they are.

The film centres on the lives of Butch Cassidy (Paul Newman) and the Sundance Kid (Robert Redford). Filmed at a time when Newman and Redford were at their best looking you really didn't give a damn that they were robbing banks.

There were many memorable segments in this movie - the endless chase scene (it was slow, not a fast chase) that must have lasted for days, everytime they looked, there was the guy in the white hat on their tail ("Who are those guys?")- the confession that the notorious Sundance, crime fighter extraordinaire, had never shot a person before - standing on the ledge with the posse on their tail and no where to go but down ("I can't swim" .... "Hell, the fall will kill us") - blowing up the train (a little dynamite will do ya) and the discussion with Woodcock, the protector of the goods.

I also loved the sequence slowing Butch and Sundance sitting in the hotel room listening to the sheriff, standing right below them, trying to get a posse together to go after them, not knowing they were right above them. Another great scene is Butch riding that bicycle. He looked like he was having so darn much fun! Katherine Ross looked great in this scene as well.

I loved the beginning with the film clips and then showing Butch in that sepia toned photography. It somehow added authenticity to the story. Probably the most famous and remembered scene in the movie is the final one - Butch and Sundance, trapped in the abandoned house or fort, whatever, they have a couple of bullets each, they are shot, they are beaten, they are dying, they never give up. That's how I want to go out - facing unmeasurable odds with all guns blazing!
