Bulletproof Monk is another comic book adapted for the big screen. It stars Chow Yun-Fat, Seann William Scott and James King in a comic martial arts movie. If you do not mind a limited plot or enjoy Jackie Chan style movies then this may be one you will enjoy, especially as the interaction between Chow Yun-Fat and Scott is similar to the interaction between Chan and Wilson in the Shanghai Knight Movies.
The Actors
Chow Yun-Fat plays a Tibetan martial arts master who has given up his name to assume his position as a monk in charge of a special scroll. This scroll if it fell into the wrong hands and read out loud would give the villain ultimate control . The charge of protecting the scroll is handed on to a new guardian every 60 years during the year of the Ram and the monks 60 years are almost up, if he cannot find a successor he will have to wait another 60 years before the next successor appears. Chow Yun-Fat is also known from being in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
Sean William Scott plays Kar a street thief who has learned martial arts watching, and working, in a cinema. Those around him think he has potential and he certainly improves when the monk takes him under his wing. You might remember Sean William Scott from American Pie 1 & 2.
The feminine interest is given by James King as Jade a mob princess who likes to hang out underground. For some reason Jade likes Kar and backs him up on a few occasions. James King also stared in Pearl Harbour
The Plot
Sixty years ago the monk is given the task of protecting a scroll. Nazis attempt to relieve him of his duty and kill most of his brother monks. Only one Nazi escapes. Sixty years later this Nazi is still after him and it is only a matter of time before the scroll is finally in his grasping hands. Fortunately the scroll protects its protector and bullets, whilst taking the monk down, do not kill him. This does mean that the scroll can be stolen if the monk is unconscious. There is a nice twist at the end and, whilst I did not see it, I am told that there is an alternative ending on some versions of the DVD’s.
Recommendation
Despite enjoying this is not a movie I would buy; viewing it once was enough for me. It is funny in places and Chow Yun-Fat is allowed more facial expression than in previous movies, although I did think that he came across as smug a lot of the time. The acting is standard and you rarely forget that it is a comic-book martial arts movie. Aside from that it is a nice relaxing movie to sit and watch during a quiet evening, plus there are some stunning special effects.
Incidentally although the movie set in New York it was filmed entirely in Toronto.
This movie was released for sale in September 2003.
Found the alternative ending in the deleated scene section of the DVD. If you have DVD do have a look at the extras and watch those cute stick men throw temper tantrums and fall.
