After a disappointing 3rd season for Buffy and the scoobies, Buffys 4th outing seems to have picked up a lot of pace returning to its original format and stand alone episodes. For anyone else that grew tied of the Angel/Buffy romance outweighing the slaying then this season is for you! With the loss of three integral characters; Cordelia (Super Bitch), Angel (Vamp with a soul) and Oz (werewolf who leaves in the first few episodes) the show could have folded and died but Joss Whedon went back to his roots and created a season that was full of action.
The season begins with Buffy and Willow starting college; Buffy is out of her depth, Willow is in her element! Giles is leading a life of retired pleasure and Xander is living in his parents basement. This season is great as it sees the return of many much loved old characters: Faith, Spike,Anya and Jonathan (who finally gets his own episode) and the introduction to Riley and Tara (the best thing to happen to the show since Faith).
The biggest storyline of this season is The Initiative; a band of army monster hunters. They are a secretive goverment operation working in the basement of the campus headed by Prof. Maggie Walsh who is hiding a deep dark secret - 314!!!

The great things about this season are the fact that finally Willow is allowed to come into her own in fact Buffy is now referred to as "Willows Friend" and more air time is given to Willows romances which have always outweighed Buffy's on the aaaaaah factor. Couplings: Anya/Xander, Willow/Tara and Buffy/Riley make a pleasant change to the brooding 'Im in love with a vampire' theme that plagued previous seasons and many of the episodes are great as stand alones if you have never seen Buffy before.

The not so great things about this series are the loss of Cordelia (who moved over to spin off Angel)although luckily Anya was at hand to take over the Bitch role and the Big Bad halfway through the season Adam isnt greatly interesting. The other bad thing is the fact that Spike gets a chip in his head - Ive never been a fan of the Vamps turning good, although he keeps his great dry humour and hate for the gang he cant fight unless he fights with them, I simply dont like him good - if you wanted him to be good then this will be a fab season for you.

My Pick of the Episodes

Hush - possibly the best episode of Buffy ever made which sees the town of Sunnydale losing their voices thanks to the creepy Gentlemen - even I jumped and Im a 28yr old Horror fan lol.

The Freshmen - In my opinion the best villian of the season Sunday (played by Katharine Towne) and the comedy from Buffy's room mate is fantastic. Not to be missed.

Somethings Blue - Very funny episode where the gang are caught in a spell; Buffy is marrying Spike, Giles is Blind and Xander is a demon magnet.

This Years Girl - This episode brings back for a short period only the fantastic Faith to create more mayhem and concern for Buffy and the gang. Faith brings a fresh change to Buffy's 'Woe is me' attitude to slaying and its great to see her back for the episode.

Episodes That Didn't Quite Cut It

Primeval - I just wasnt a fan of Adam and since this episode was all about stopping Adam's evil plan it simply didnt do anything for me.

Superstar - It was great that long stander Jonathan finally got his own episode but I didnt actually enjoy the break from the norm where Jonathan is the greatest at everything. He has books, he slays demons, is a playboy type and even starred in the Matrix. Its funny but not a great one for fans of the shows premise.

Beer Bad - I will probably get harranged for this but Sarah Michelle Gellar simply isnt a great actress - she is fab as whiney mopey Buffy but this episode demanded that she was a cave woman; it just wasnt pulled off. Not such great writing in this episode and it all seemed to fall flat.

I agree, it was awful neutering poor spike like that, but I don't see how they could have kept him in it without restraining him somehow (otherwise he would have killed Buffy or she him!) and even a chipped Spike is better than no Spike!!!!! I HATED Beer Bad too! Great review :O)
