A friend of mine bought me the Buffy season six box set for my birthday recently. Well actually it was the first half of season six. And if you want an quick idea of what I thought then you should know that I HAD to go out and buy the second half less than a week later. I found it utterly compelling.
I'm trying not to think about the fact that season six has just started on BBC2. But then if you can't afford the box set I suppose it is a godsend.
The season starts a few months after the last one left off. Buffy is dead. The scoobies are trying to keep up with Sunnydales increasingly odd demon community. And the only thing standing between Buffy's little sis Dawn from going into care is BuffyBot, an exact robot double of Buffy only half as smart. Things are not looking good.
Well thats all the plot you are going to get from me. Im certainly not going to be the one to spoil it for those who haven't seen it yet. But that won't stop me from filling you in.
Over the years that Buffy has been running it has managed to developed a unique style that mixes light hearted humour with both drama and horror. Season six, unlike the first three seasons, definitely puts the emphasis on the drama.
The main characters, Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar), Xander (Nicholas Brendon), Willow (Alyson Hannigan), Spike (James Marsters), Giles (Anthony Stewert-head) and Dawn (Michelle Trachtenberg) seem to spend most of their time alternately fighting evil and making stupid decisions then hiding them from their friends. Hence the drama.
And that's the beauty of it. Even if ghoulies and ghosties and long leggedy beasties aren't your bag there is plenty of life stuff going on to keep you interested. If it isn't Buffys twisted lovelife it's Xander and Anyas pre-marital bickering. Or Willows emotional struggle with magic addiction. Or Spikes warped attempts at romance. Or even Dawns pubescant whining. There is something for everyone.
Series highlights include Buffybots big eyed, innocent quipping. The series Baddies Jonathon, Warren and Andrew, a trio of Uber-Geeks whos aims include making a ton of cash, seizing ultimate power and having sex with girls. The Halloween episode where Dawn makes her first attempts at romance but ends up in the middle of a huge vampfest.
Then there is my favourite episode. A real gem. Buffy - THE MUSICAL. Yes, you heard me right, the musical. Buffy and crew singing and dancing whilst slicing and dicing. While some of the songs kinda miss the mark the whole episode leaves you with so many classic moments that you really don't care what a bad singer Spike is!
I could go on all day. But like I said I won't spoilt too much. It's funny, scary, sexy and sometimes moving. Top Stuff.
However in the interest of balance I must make one minor complaint. I don't like soap opera. Never have. And at times Buffy season six does look a little too much like Sunset Beach. I preferred it when the emphasis was placed on telling interesting stories with a beginning, middle and end inside of the 44 minute time limit. The trend now seems to be for long sweeping plots that take nearly half a season to get going. Its hard to tell whether this is because they can't think of decent stories that can be told in quick formats or they are just getting bored.
In the end I don't really care as this is just a minor quibble. There is far too much good stuff here to start picking fault.
Buffy season six is a must have.

I like you loved season six, especially the msuical. I really feel for Spike in this series although i didin't like what he tried to do Buffy. Overall it was an excellent series like the previous ones. I have watched the first half of series seven and am disappointed this is the last one. Oh well will just have to watch them all again from the start. lesley

I'm a massive Buffy fan, and I know I will get this on DVD box set when it comes out (I have all the others!) but I have to say, this wasn't my fave season by a long stretch! :) Jami
Advantages: Adventure, great story line that follows on through out all the series, is very funny in majority of parts (especially when spike arrives) and also has tragedy and romance for all you hopeless lovers out there :-) Disadvantages: Only that Angel leaves and makes his own series which i dont really like :-(
Advantages: The most innovative, entertaining, thought-provoking show on television, all in the same box. Like having a novel playing before you... Disadvantages: Not as good as Buffy gets, but a vital introduction...
