When Buffy was on TV, I used to be a pretty big fan. However, recently I realised that I only started watching Buffy about half way through, and I've never seen anything from the first season. In all honesty, I probably would have been a lot happier if I would have stayed this way.
The basic plot is pretty simple: Buffy is a 16 year old girl who moves to Sunnydale. She is the Chosen One, chosen to fight vampires and save the world, because it just so happens that there's a Hellmouth in Sunnydale where all kinds of evil can pour out. Some viewers might be put off by thinking that the show is all about vampires, but they might be surprised to know that actually, Buffy has to fight all kinds of evil, including witches and a giant praying mantis.
Yes, a giant praying mantis. There are a lot of episodes in the season that introduce enemies that were just too ridiculous for my liking, ranging from robot demons to hyena-possessed children. These enemies were so ridiculous to me that it was hard for me to even conceive that they could be a threat to anyone at all.
I think that one of the most worrying things about this season is that anyone who's heard such great things about Buffy might see this and think that all of Buffy is like this, which, as far as I remember, it really isn't. The core of the show is still the same, same characters, and as this is the Season where we see most of these characters for the first time, you might consider it worth it just to get to know them.
In fact, the characters in this show are one of the best things about the show, and while some of the performances aren't great, you can see that they do improve throughout the course of the season. One of the most interesting character arcs is Cordelia's, who starts off as being extremely one-dimensional, but soon turns into something a lot more interesting to watch.
Also, the episode "I Robot, You Jane", which features the ridiculous robot demon, is actually worth watching because it tells you so much about the character of Willow. And that's the thing that I liked about this season of Buffy: once you get past the often stupid plot, there's usually some good character development going on.
Despite these often stupid plots, there are a few episodes that I thought were really worth watching. Obviously, this includes the first episode, which starts with a scene that made me so excited to be watching Buffy again, because it promised a show where nothing is predictable. While it's a shame this feeling didn't stay throughout the season, other episodes that I thought were entertaining were the episodes "Angel", episode 7, and the season finale, "Prophecy Girl". These episodes are not to be missed, but it's just such a shame that they had to be surrounded by the other poor episodes.
Yes, it's clear that the show is going through some bad teething problems, and it seems to be finding its way a bit, but there are some good episodes here, and you are also likely to find some very witty dialogue which keeps the energy of the series pretty high, especially if the episode was written by Joss Whedon.
If you're a fan and you've never seen the first season, don't get your hopes up, but watch it to see how the show has progressed, but if you're considering starting the show from scratch, then don't judge the show as a whole just by this first season.
