Not very often do you come across episodes of 'Friends' where they burst into song, or 'Six Feet Under' where they begin to dance about the dead man on the slab in front of them. But Buffy the Vampire Slayer decided to reach for something new, and here it is.
Buffy: The Musical.
I don't think I'd ever seen an episode of any kind quite like this, but as soon as it was aired, I loved it! So I just had to buy the DVD. And I was not disappointed.
Starring Sarah Michelle Gellar (Scooby Doo), Alyson Hannigan (American Pie), Nicolas Brendon, Emma Caulfield, James Marsters and Anthony Head.
Written and directed by Joss Whedon.
The Plot A supernatural power is playing a trick on the vampire hunters of Sunnydale. Everyone feels the urge to sing.
It begins with the gang waking up in the morning, bouncing around the house unusually chirpier than they ever COULD be.
The first musical scene we see is Buffy walking through a cemetery, and begins to sing about 'Going Through the Motions.'
The next morning the gang convene in the Magic Shop and Buffy asks them if anyone else had burst into song.
Soon they discover it isn’t JUST them, it’s the entire town. People everywhere have got the tap-dance-fever and the singing-syndrome.
But everything is not as fresh and bubbly as it may seem.
I won’t go further into the plot as I don’t want to ruin it. However, performances include:
The Gang’s ‘I’ve Got A Theory’ Tara’s ‘I’m Under Your Spell’ Spike’s ‘Rest In Peace’ Gile’s ‘Wish I Could Stay’ And the famous, ‘Walk Through the Fire.’
Find yourself singing along (and maybe even dancing) to this wonderful musical as the gang go further into the fantasy world than you imagined.
As for features on this DVD, saying I was astounded would be a lie. I really wasn’t. In fact, I expected for there to be many more related to the DVD. But the features include:
Angel Season 1 Overview Featurette Dark Angel – Interview with Jessica Alba Trailers
There is also a ‘Buffy Inside the Music’ featurette which I thought would be more about the actual episode than the overall music within the series.
However, the DVD itself is most definitely far from disappointing. There is no way you can hate this episode. It’s just too much fun!
I would give it an 8/10. I won’t give it a 9 or 10 because of the extras, but if it was about the episode itself, I would definitely give it 10! It is one of the best episodes there is!
