What’s this you say??? A Buffy musical???
This dvd is one episode from season six of Joss Whedon’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It is at the time when Buffy has been raised from the dead (you need to watch the rest of the show to get a full understanding of some of this) and is none to pleased about it, her little sister, Dawn, is stealing anything in sight to get a bit of attention, Willow’s use of magic is starting to become an addiction, and Xander and Anya are planning their wedding. Ooh, and Spike has fallen in love with the slayer.
Suddenly the world turns into one big musical, and everyone is bursting into song left, right and centre. These songs cannot be controlled, and feelings are being sung for all to hear. Is it caused by a kid dreaming? Evil witches? Bunnies???
It gradually unfolds that a demon is responsible, and when the songs and feelings get too much for people, they dance themselves into flames.
You wouldn’t think that a Buffy musical would work, but incredibly it does. There are some extremely talented singers in the cast such as Anthony Stewart Head (Giles), Amber Benson (Tara), and James Marsters (Spike), with Whedon’s writing skills and Hinton Battle’s superb performance as demon Sweet, it makes for a Great musical. It even made it into the top 20 of Channel Four’s 100 Greatest Musicals recently (I know that it only got this high because it is fashionable now, much like Lord of The Rings was guaranteed to win the Big Read, but might not have done 5 years ago).
There are weak voices too – Alyson Hannigan only has about 3 singing lines as she doesn’t like to sing, and Buffy’s voice leaves a lot to be desired! The quality of the songs though means that it doesn’t matter.
There are a mixture of numbers – Tara’s moving love ballad, Spike’s rock love song, Xander and Anya’s big band song provides plenty of variety, and something for everyone.
Yes, it’s cheesy at times (it’s a musical version of Buffy – what do you expect???), but it is great. Look out for cameos from Marti Noxon and David Fury (producers/writers) as the Mustard Man, and the Parking Ticket Lady.
It works quite well as a stand-alone episode, with a lot of the plot being covered by the songs, but knowledge of Buffy would make it more enjoyable.
That was only the episode though – what about the dvd?
A waste of money for what you get, which is: the episode
* Angel Season One overview featurette - A couple of cast interviews and a little bit about the making of Angel (I had seen this before - I think maybe on another Buffy dvd)
* “Buffy inside the music” featurette - this wasn't bad, you got to learn a bit about the making of the musical etc
* A Dark Angel interview - I'll be honest... I haven't watched this. I am a Buffy fan, that doesn't mean that I want to watch interviews about all things sci-fi - if you like Dark Angel though you might enjoy it
* Some trailers - Ooh, adverts, exciting!!! Or maybe not.
If you are going to buy this, then you are probably a Buffy fan, and would be better off buying the whole season – you get so many more extras for your money, and this episode.
It generally costs about £15.99 – for 48 minutes of episode!!!!
A quick bit of Buffy “Once more with feeling” trivia for you:
When Sweet has left, Dawn walks across the stage and says “The hardest thing in this world is to live in it” – this is what Buffy said just before she died.
