feats in every season, but Once More With Feeling is perhaps the most creatively challenging episode so far. A superbly enjoyable pastiche of old Hollywood musicals and Broadway shows, it finds an all-singing, all-dancing demon descending on Sunnydale intent on making the town's inhabitants free their innermost secrets through song. As a pivotal episode it proves a turning point for many of the characters, and as a unique piece of TV it's quite clearly unrivalled. There isn't a bad song among them and it's hard not to turn demon-green with envy that show creator Joss Wheedon, who wrote and directed this episode, can be so sickeningly talented. It doesn't matter that some of the cast are less then blessed vocally, but stand-out performances from James Marsters (Spike) and Amber Benson (Tara) help carry along the weaker voices. This book is fan's dream with a detailed behind-the-scenes look at how the episode came about, the complete script, photographs and even the music sheets should you wish to try the songs from the comfort of your Steinway. This is a worthy and essential companion to perhaps Buffy's finest hour (and eight minutes) yet. --Jonathan Weir
a new one, it became something of a turn-of the-century television mini-trend. But few have reached as far--or succeeded--like this 2001 episode ofBuffy the Vampire Slayer. Penned by series creator-producer Josh Whedon and performed by Sarah Michelle Gellar and cast, it's a loving, loopy musical pastiche that takes pot shots at everything from Andrew Lloyd Webber to indie-rock. Paralleling the show's lovable pop culture tweaking, the musical styles here (the episode's musical conceit is a curse visited upon Buffy's hometown of Sunnydale) range from a patent footlight chorus of demons being interrupted by Gellar's hard-rocking stake thrusts on "Going Through the Motions" to Spike the Vampire's goth-metal complaint "Rest in Peace", with everything from parking tickets and mustard stain removal to climactic duels with the supernatural getting the Broadway send-up. Also includes strong orchestral score-suites from three other episodes, as well as Whedon and wife Kai Cole's demo for "Something to Sing About".--Jerry McCulley

So there are far more special features here if that's ... ...Whedon's finest moment of inspiration. Buffy the Vampire Slayer was a cult classic but this is something just that bit extra special. In this one-off musical packed into a single episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Joss Whedon gave us the funniest, cleverest show ever produced. It was packed with song and dance - a complete shocker in a series that had neither - and yet it followed the plot on from previous episodes without missing a beat. Willow ...

Advantages: Some great songs, the episode Disadvantages: Shoddy extras, the price
...this you say??? A Buffy musical???
This dvd is one episode from season six of Joss Whedon’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It is at the time when Buffy has been raised from the dead (you need to watch the rest of the show to get a full understanding of some of this) and is none to pleased about it, her little sister, Dawn, is stealing anything in sight to get a bit of attention, Willow’s use of magic is starting to become an addiction, and Xander and ... ...You wouldn’t think that a Buffy musical would work, but incredibly it does. There are some extremely talented singers in the cast such as Anthony Stewart Head (Giles), Amber Benson (Tara), and James Marsters (Spike), with Whedon’s writing skills and Hinton Battle’s superb performance as demon Sweet, it makes for a Great musical. It even made it into the top 20 of Channel Four’s 100 Greatest Musicals recently (I know that it only got this high because ...

I don't think I'd ever seen an episode of any kind quite like this, but as soon as it was aired, I loved it! So I just had to buy the DVD. And I was not disappointed.

The next morning the gang convene in the Magic Shop and Buffy asks them if anyone else had burst into song.

But everything is not as fresh and bubbly as it may seem.
