Bubba Ho-Tep is a comedy horror movie directed by Don Coscarelli (who also directed all four "Phantasm" films) and stars the legend that is Bruce Campbell!
Campbell plays Elvis, the actual, real Elvis. It seems he switched places with a look-alike (also played by Campbell) because he got bored of all the glitz and glamour and wanted to get back to his roots. Unfortunately the contract he drew up was destroyed and he had an accident that threw out his hip so he never got a chance to switch back, and now spends his day in an old folk's home. He teams up with Jack (Ossie Davis), a fellow resident who believes that he is John F. Kennedy and that his skin was dyed black. Together they investigate the recent spate of deaths in their home, and find out it may be to do with an ancient Egyptian mummy, as you do. As no-one else believes them these two old codgers have to take on the entity themselves, regardless of their capabilities.
A good original story here, and is handled superbly by the actors. Bruce Campbell is great in everything he does, and this is not exception. He does such a great job it's hard to imagine anyone else doing a better job. The chemistry between him and Davis is great, and they work well together. I suppose to some it would seem that not much happens, but I think it's paced well for what the film is about, that is, old people trying to figure out a mystery. Their minds and their bodies aren't what they used to be, so they go as quickly as they can, which is pretty slow.
The writing is good, especially Elvis's somewhat crude inner monologues as he laments about his life and his daughter, and of the cyst he has growing somewhere private. There are also some funny jokes about the home these old people live in, which some might see as cutting quite close to the bone, but I think are fitting to the film, but then I do like edgy humour.
Overall a very entertaining, original horror movie that should be on every horror fan's "must-see" list, four stars!

Advantages: Quirky concept, a stand-out performance from Campbell, cracking and entertaining dialogue. Disadvantages: Not much horror, concept may be a little to extreme for some!
