So how many films and theories have been made over the years about Elvis still being alive? Some say hes on a dessert island enjoying the sun and sand with other famous legends like Tupac and Kurt Cobain just to get away on it all, others label him a spy for the mafia and he had to go underground quickly, or he was placed underground quickly, with a gunshot wound to his temple. But whatever the theories, you would start to get tired of them after a while. Bubba ho-tep is a film about Elvis still being alive. Whats so different about it though is that it gives the "other" less glamours side to his, disapearence as it turns out he ends up in an old peoples home as one of the residents... So far the film seems slightly far fetched allready, but if you add a Black JFK and an ancient Mummy whos killing people you start to get a picture
of, oh dear god this film sounds appaling.
For a start do not trust your instincts on this one!!! Let me ask you something, have you ever seen or done something that was incrediably incrediably stupid, or the idea was absolutely appaling, but somehow it was the funnyest thing you have ever seen? Put that into the context of this film and you have your answer. This film has such a terribly sounding plot that it just lifts off from the ground and is one of the funnyest movies i have ever seen.
So to the plot... Set at an old peoples home in Texas, we have our elvis alive and not exactly well. Hes stuck in bed in an old peoples home after switching places with an Elvis impersonator and in subsequant years, he breaks his hip and ends up in bed for the rest of his life. So with the theory out the way, what could possibly happen in an old peoples home? Well for a start the residents are all starting to die one by one. Could be natural causes of course, but something is moving within the home at night, and you can hear the screams echoing throughout the hallways. Whats causing all of this trouble? Why its a Mummy of course (it gets better)! And here we have our hero Elvis noticing that something is afoot and he starts to investigate with non other than JFK... the black version of course, and that is the basics of the film plot. To give anymore away would be criminal because one of the main features of this film is to go into it expecting it to be absolutely awful! Then be incrediably surprised as it is one of funnyest things i have ever seen! If you can not take my word for it, id suggest going and finding the trailor to watch as at the very least you get explained just why JFK had a reversed "Michael Jackson".
My overall impression of this film is that it is simply hilarious, yet alot of it is black humour. The whole feel to it is something very different to any other film ive watched. To put it better, it gives the impression that there was very little money spent on it, and everything that is in it, is made to be tacky. This is something in my opinion that just adds to the hilarity and is what makes this plot from hell turn into an angel from heaven.
To whom will this film appeal to you ask? Anyone with a good sense of humour. This film is not one for people who can not get the sense of irony imbedded into it about elvis, as alot of it is Elvis talking. But people who hate Elvis should watch this film, especially people who hate people saying he is still alive as you will love the ending. Aside from that, only mothers between the age of 30 and 50 will not find this film funny. (Based on a research survey containing one particpant, namely my mum).
The bonus features contain the Making of Bubba Ho-tep which focuses mainly on the effects and make up side to it, which is worth watching if you can't believe this film got funding, a few deleted scenes, a photo gallery, the trailors and commentary. With the commentary there is one with bruce cambell (Elvis) and Coscarelli, but if you want my advice be watching the one with Cambell playing Elvis commentating.
So to end this, just remember, just because it has the most outrageous plot you have ever heard about, and its got odds of 1000 to 1 on being rubbish, don't always believe it. This is a little gem for anyone to sit on their shelves.
