Elvis is in the building and ready to take care of business. The only problem is that the building is a rest home in Texas and his use of a zimmer frame inhibits his ability to do too much. Luckily his friend, and fellow rest home inhabitant, JFK has a motorised wheelchair and is ready and willing to work with him.
Based on a short story by the ultra violent Joe R. Lansdale Bubba Hotep is surprisingly light on horror, thrills and action. What Don Coscarelli, writer/director, has concentrated on is the comedy and the characters and this works so fantastically well. What we have is two old men in a situation that is bizarre even for them, hey one thinks he is Elvis (or is he really him?) and the other JFK (again could it really be him?).
Bruce Campbell, almost unrecognisable as Elvis, does the best Elvis since Kurt Russell and Ossie Davis displays some wonderful facial expressions as JFK. His look of wild eyed wonder at one staged is a sight to see. Yes I know what you're thinking Ossie Davis is the wrong colour to play JFK, go and see the film for his explanation of this!
For me the enjoyment of this film is derived from the two characters, how they interact together and that they retain that 'spark', that lust for life that seems to have deserted most of those living in the dreary rest home. It is that spark that leads them to investigate the creature that is stalking the home and killing the other inhabitants.
I loved this film, and going by those around me so did many others, it is full of great dialogue, top quality acting by Campbell and Davis, and doesn't run long enough to run out of steam which can be a common mistake for adapting short stories. It also has what is an almost iconic scene of Elvis and JFK, in full 'uniform', coming out into a long corridor side by side ready to take on Bubba Hotep. Elvis in white 70's style costume with his zimmer frame and JFK in black suit and motorised wheelchair. This will stick in my memory for a long time.
There is only one thing left to say and that would be to everyone involved in the film Thank You, Thank You Very Much!
