Released in 2003 this hour and 41 minute (101 minute) comedy follows the life of a disgruntled news reporter who feels totally let down by God himself… leading to some rather strange situations.
** BRIEF PLOT **
Bruce Nolan, (played by Jim Carrey) is not happy with his life and feels as if God is laughing at him from above… Firstly, his job as a television reporter isn't going well as he keeps failing to achieve that promotion to anchorman that he so desperately wants. Secondly, his relationship with his girlfriend, Grace Connelly, (played by Jennifer Anniston), is on the rocks, mainly due to his selfishness. And to top
it all… the final straw for Bruce is when he gets beaten up by some thugs as he tries to help a homeless person on the street…
He instinctively blames God almighty himself… screaming into the skies that God is not doing his job properly, allowing all these bad things to happen to people, especially him… and he could do a better job himself…
His ranting is soon put to the test when he God himself, (played by Morgan Freeman) decides to see if Bruce could do a better job at being God… only things don't go quite to plan for Bruce and his new found powers… with his selfish attitude and pent up anger holding him hostage inside, unable to really believe in himself and what he really wants in his life.
But once Bruce gains his God like powers the fun really starts, for him that is… not for the people who have angered him through his life, such as the thugs who beat him up… they certainly get there comeuppance in a rather peculiar sort of way, and his pet dog takes on a seriously heavy training regime, with some remarkable and very funny results… even Grace has a couple of changes on her chest, much to the amazement of the now Almighty Bruce…
As Bruce realises just what he can do he naturally does what he does best… thinks of himself… doing everything to make his life easier… with some rather amazing results…
So with God taking a back seat it is now up to Bruce to sort out his own life whilst answering everyone else prayers… only there are just so damned many of them…
** IN CONCLUSION **
Another great movie for Jim Carrey fans, with his over the top mannerism and comical ways. The movie itself is based on a good idea and is quite well written, although there is a chance that it may be offensive to certain individuals if they don't see this the way it was intended… it is a simple comedy and NOT a dig at any religion…
The movie is a little slow to start with nothing much happening apart from the hell which Bruce sees as his own life… we simply watch as his career and relationship begin to go own the proverbial pan… even his pet dog seems to enjoy winding him up with his 'naughty business' doings left all over the apartment… But once Bruce takes on his roll as God the movie really kicks in, with many comical scenarios… including a very well trained dog and a very confused but rather pleased girlfriend.
The all round acting is good enough to keep the movie entertaining and funny. Freeman is his usual cool self, his character being unruffled by the stupidity of Bruce.. As for Anniston, well what can be said about her…? She plays her role brilliantly, bringing a good dollop (or two) of 'eye candy' to the screen with her beauty and charm, (she has come a long way since her role as the spoilt brat in Friends).
It is an all round entertaining movie, although if you aren't familiar with or simply can't stand the acting techniques of Jim Carrey then you might want to give this one a miss as it is Carrey as he is… simple, stupid and just plain over the top… you either love him or hate him…) But for all you Carrey fans out there this is another of his fine comedies with his totally exaggerated mannerism and style…
Lisa Ann Walter as Debbie Connelly Philip Baker Hall as Jack Baylor Steve Carrell as Evan Baxter Catherine Bell as Susan Ortega Sally Kirkland as Anita Mann Nora Dunn as Ally Loman Eddie Jemison as Bobby

I see this has been posted in the category for the Blu-Ray DVD, but mentions nothing about the new Blu-Ray format. Given that this has been posted in this specialised category, I would like to know about the quality of the new format.
