Hey, how's it going? Are you getting out the munchies? Rutt & Tuke the moose here, eh? We want to tell you about the new Brother Bear movie eh? Is that okay? Beauty! You know some of us said we were the real stars of the first movie….

Hey, don't trample off yet; I want to tell you more about it, eh? It is that certain time of year eh, when spring fever takes over and a fella, aw gees, is looking out for their very own moosette. It is a story of pairing off and best friends feeling left out, eh? We had that when we first met the fetching moosettes didn't we eh? But we were both real babe magnets weren't we eh? Beauty.
Also the story tells of the continuing adventures of largish Bear (that is Kenai to you) and smallish bear (that is Koda) eh? Also there is this new girl called Nita; she's a live wire I can tell you eh? We help them again as the Great Spirits say they all need to go on a journey to break the past. Whoa, that's deep eh? Sure is eh?

We gotta go now, I see the moosettes are moving on, catch you later eh?

Now that they have gone we can more sensible. As the moose were saying, this is the follow up to the movie Brother Bear. Clue is in the title. Now I am wondering if you need to see the first one to understand and enjoy this one. The answer is I don't think so but you might understand a bit more about the spirits and the origins of Kenai's status if you did. Otherwise it would be rather strange to see this bear dreaming about a girl! Also I believe that it would be more enjoyable if you had seen the first movie. Kenai used to be human but became a bear in the first movie and adopted Koda as his little brother. Nita was a girl he knew when he was young. They had unknowingly sealed a bond which needs to be broken if she is to marry.

The film is set in an undetermined place and time shortly after the first movie's end. From the viewing and the existence of mammoths, it would appear to be set in Northern Canada at the end of the ice age.

It follows on similar lines to the first movie with the story featuring travelling to a specific spot for the spirits to do their business. However, there is not the depth, emotion or development of character that is so prevalent in the first movie. Kenai's past, as a human, is only relevant to the plot as part of the contrived device to bring Nita into the story. So all the development of understanding between humans and animals is not present in this film at all. I won't spoil the ending but it is a rather obvious twist. As the moose said earlier, the theme is the bonding of boys and girls and the effect this has on other friendships.

I quite liked the movie but my kids lost interest on their first viewing. All the lovey-dovey stuff is not for them and as I said before it doesn't have the wonder and impact of the first movie. There need to be more laughs and action for them.

Characters:

Kenai (Patrick Dempsey) Kenai was originally a human. He became a bear in the first movie so you need to watch that to understand how and why that came about. In this movie he is played by a different actor, which I don't think was so well played. However in this film there isn't so much depth or development to work with.

Koda (Jeremy Suarez) Reprises his role from the original film. You can't mistake his voice. He is played as a wonderful cheeky chappy but his fears in this film are rather shallow. However, he still shows aspects of his fun nature but his presence is no longer central to the plot.

Nita (Mandy Moore) She is a new character that comes out of the blue without any reference from the first film. She needs to break a pact unknowingly made with Kenai in able to marry and she seems quite happy to do so. As Disney heroines seem to be now she has a lot of pluck and a tomboyish nature but still has a fear to overcome, which is telegraphed well in advance.

Rutt & Tuke (Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas) These have to be my favourite characters. The banter between them is great. I think that it was so important that they retained the same voice talents from before. They are great fun and provide the much-needed subplot. (I have to be nice because I can see them coming over again.)

Bonus features:

Game: Trample off eh?
We're back eh? Don't rattle your antlers, the moosettes need a break from our sophisticated charms. It's our game so let us tell you about it eh? The aim of our game (note our game; not smallish bear eh?) is to get eight moose chips in order to take the rather fetching moosettes to the Northern Lights Show. Got that eh? Beauty. Corny? I know. But we are here and we keep the game full of funny quips eh? There are three types of question chosen at random: nature call, spring fever and the story eh? The first two types are general knowledge whilst the third is about the film itself so watch us in the film first to have a chance eh? The answers are multiple-choice with a varying choice between 2, 3 and 4 options. We are tough wild animals aren't we eh? So we went the unusual route in this sort of game in that there is no second chance eh? A wrong answer cannot be redeemed. However you don't have to get all eight to be able to go to the show but you don't get to sit at the front unless you do eh? You will then find that there is some amusing little banter between us to wind up the game. You may wonder how repetitive it might become after awhile, though. However the ending is different depending on how many moose chips you win and we find kids seem quite happy with repetition eh? Beauty. Catch you later eh?

Video - behind the music of Brother Bear 2
This is a pretty standard piece about how wonderful and clever the putting together of the music all is. Melissa Etheridge is the main singer / songwriter later accompanied by Josh Kelley. No I haven't heard of them either. But to hear this would make you think they were absolutely huge stars and this movie was going to win Academy Awards for its music. I don't think so. One of my son's favourite Disney tracks is "Tell everybody I'm on my way" by Phil Collins from the first movie. I don't think any of these efforts are going to compete with that. It was interesting to hear though that some of the drawings were influenced by the music rather than the other way around.

All in all, it is a pretty standard follow up movie. As it seems with most sequels, it doesn't come up to nearly the standards of the original. However, the amusing moose bring in the laughs and that is always something to be grateful for eh? Beauty.

Great review! Brother Bear is one of my all-time favourite films (due to Rutt and Tuke), so I was dead excited to get Brother Bear 2. While it's not nearly as good as the original, it does have 4 moose rather than 2. For for this reason alone I would have to give it five stars - but that is just me and my moose obsession!
