The One That Got Away
Review of The One That Got Away DVD by  ruckinel

Advantages: the film turns the generic convention of escaped prisoner on its head
Disadvantages: some scenes look dated

...The One That Got Away shows Germans in a sympathetic - even heroic - light, only a dozen years after WWII had ended. It also makes for an interesting exercise in the power of cinema. Despite bitter postwar feelings it must have been hard for Allied audiences not to root for the `enemy' POW trying to escape back to his homeland. And how many British films of that time would have gambled with a German actor as its leading man? As it happened, this was a star turn for Hardy Kruger, who gives a charismatic performance as Lt Franz von Werra, a Luftwaffe pilot forced down over Kent and then shipped to a POW camp in the Lake District. His tenacious escape attempts throughout the remainder of the film make for compelling viewing. He tries so hard that you'll really want him to succeed, especially by the end (in a sequence I find quite surreal... Read review

"Do You Sell Bath Plugs?"
Review of Full Circle With Michael Palin DVD by  zyxwv

Advantages: Palin, interesting interviewees, more insight than 'Around the World'
Disadvantages: None if you yearn to travel and like Palin.

...nightmares of travelling by ship and rail, with one eye permanently fixed on the ever ticking clock. He reflected that all he saw of Singapore were the docks as he made haste to join another ship to continue the race against Fogg's ghost. So while Palin was able to dip his toe in to the culture of the nations he passed through, he was never able to completely break the shackles of expediency due to the time limit on his journey. No longer constrained by such restrictive schedules, 'Full Circle' was Palin's chance to exercise more freedom to explore and savour the countries that crossed his path, which this time entailed eighteen nations along the Pacific Rim. His journey covers 50,000 miles, starting in Alaska and circumnavigating the globe over the course of a year. Whilst 'Eighty Days' was to a certain degree about Palin's triumphs... Read review

Anaconda
Review of Anaconda DVD by  JOSI78

Advantages:
Disadvantages:

...This tale of a lethal 40 foot anaconda is thoroughly entertaining. A documentary film crew embark on a journey to find an undocumented tribe, only they find an evil loner on a journey to find an anaconda. They wind up coming face to face with giant water snakes and battle for their lives. The film is action packed and has good special effects. Its best to watch this on a big screen as it is very fast and full of surprises. I would recommend this to people who enjoyed films such as Lake Placid, Jaws or Piranha.... Read review
