Plot: After teenager Pattie Bates is knocked-down by a hit-and-run driver, she returns from hospital unable speak or look after herself, completely dependent on her parents Tom and Amy. Michael Kitchen plays Martin, an odd young man who says he's an old friend of Pattie's and would like to look after her. But they soon begin to wonder if he's really the good samaritan he seemed to be, and their worst fears are realised when Pattie is raped. Recorded by the BBC in 1976, this adaptation of Dennis Potter's BRIMSTONE AND TREACLE was not orignally shown due to the Director of Programmes' reservations. In 1987 an edited version finally made it to the small screen, and remained powerful and shocking.

Advantages: Good performances Disadvantages: A formulaic film with nothing to bring it above the rank and file
...cucumber sandwiches and even fish and chips if they’re feeling common. No wonder Americans think that “Mary Poppins” is representative of British life! I don’t understand why Brits are perpetuating this myth. I realise that it’s a tried and tested formula, but it could so easily become anachronistic. That this rose-tinted view of our green and pleasant land comes from the man who set “Richard III” in Nazi Germany and brought us “Brimstone and Treacle” seems even stranger.
Not to say that this is a bad movie, it just isn’t terribly original. The skies are always blue, the people always happy and it only rains when the script requires it. It isn’t shot in a very innovative way either, meandering along, glorying in romantic dawns and sunsets, standing well back from the actors and never giving the feeling of intimacy as rom-com requires to bring...

Advantages: Excellent picture and sound quality. Loadsa extras Disadvantages: Very slow menus.
...Firstly, let me say that navigating through the menus on this disc is like wading through treacle. Everythings nicely presented and the extras are worth the wait...but man is it slow!
I'm talking about the two disc collectors edition here and do not hesitate in saying that you get your moneys worth. OK, so the movie isn't the best in the world, but it's still highly enjoyable and the animation is simply spot on.
Highlights of the movie? The egg travels and the meteor shower. And that little spikey dinosaur that carries a stick in its mouth.
Sound and picture quality are perfect throughout. I saw this at the cinema and remember thinking that the DVD was going to be something special. I for one, was not disappointed and still think this is one of the better discs on the shelf.
The soundtrack is also pretty awesome...turn it up loud...

Advantages: can't beat a bit of bear Disadvantages: too short, have to keep putting back on as littlun cant get enough
...My littlun loves bear. He's a happy, larger then life character who always manages to see the good in things (bit american cheesy i know but my littluns only two and he adores all that up beat sick as treacle happy happy stuff-so who's to argue). Bear and his pals Tutter, OJ, Pip and Pop, Treelow (with the odd guest appearance from Doc Hogg and Grandma Tutter to name a few) manage to find a way to make "Going Potty" (there words not mine) fun for the preshoolers in your life. Bear manages to sniff, dance and scratch his way through three quarters of an hour of toilet time fun. Give it a go they'll get hooked and you'll have to scour the land in search of the rest of the Bear in the Big Blue House DVD collection....
