the Park), here takes a stab at Simon's most autobiographical work, which stars Jonathan Silverman as an aspiring writer living with two families under one roof in 1937 Brooklyn. Following his old working formula, Saks keeps an eye on the cast's energy and timing but otherwise stays out of the way and lets Simon's story and dialogue tumble wonderfully from the mouths of good actors. Cast in the lead in this 1986 film, the young Silverman (later the star of NBC'sSingle Guy) makes a very good impression, as does Bob Dishy as his narrator-father. 's lives are hard and hopeless and they grift as best they can to get by. The gloom extends to the locations too, from the grey and empty streets of London to the cold and desolate Brightonbeach.
And yet despite the despair and the lengths that street worker Kelly (played quite brilliantly by Lorraine Stanley) has to go to to simply survive, she discovers a streak of maternal compassion and morality when she takes the lost 12 year-old Joanne (a stunning debut by Georgia Groome) under her wing as the girls go on the run from some very bad men. The cast is uniformly excellent but particularly the two female leads and the vicious thug Derek who is played with such clinical and chilling effiiciency by Johnny Harris.
This truly impressive first feature film, announces a major talent in Paul Williams, both as director and writer. His ...
Advantages: Great music Disadvantages: expensive at weekend
I have recently spent two Saturday nights in a row at The Beach Club in Brighton and I have thoroughly enjoyed both of them.
What is it?
In the day time The Beach runs as a café beach bar, with an outside seating area onto Brightonbeach itself you will get a great view of the pier.
At about 10pm all the tables and chairs are cleared from the outside, the doors are shut and it turns into a night club.
The night club is massive with a double sided bar in the middle of the room. There is also a chill out room separate from the main dance floor with large comfy chairs so that you can give your danced out legs a rest.
For those of you who smoke a tented outside area is available, but you can not take your drinks out with you.
I have been for two birthday parties, on for Tricia24 with a mixture of people aged between 25 ...

A warmly nostalgic quality that has traveled very nicely to the screen... Funny, affecting and, in the best sense, familiar. (New York Times, )
The performances are skilled all the way through... The lighting gives everything an airy luminous quality... (Variety, )
