In the screen adaptation of BRIDGET JONES'S DIARY, Helen Fielding's international best-selling phenomenon, documentary filmmaker (and real-life inspiration for the character...
more...Shazzer) Sharon Maguire has managed a rare feat - a film as captivating as the novel. Bridget Jones (Renee Zellweger) is a pretty and neurotic thirtysomething singleton (in her vernacular) who vows to take control of her life after being humiliated by handsome, standoffish barrister, Mark Darcy (Colin Firth) at her parents' New Year's party. Determined to lose weight and cut back on vices like wine, cigarettes, and workaholic-alcoholic-misogynistic men, Bridget begins a diary to chart her progress. Unfortunately, the P.R. executive hits a snag when her boss, gorgeous cad Daniel (Hugh Grant) instigates a sexy e-mail flirtation. Despite her tendency to bungle book launch parties, and any situation involving the ever-present, ever-disapproving Mark Darcy, Bridget's winning combination of charm, vulnerability, and wit intrigues not only the seductively dangerous Daniel, but also the arrogant barrister. Featuring a note-perfect performance by Zellweger, a devilishly against-type one by Grant, and the inspired casting of Firth (the object of Bridget's lusty fantasies in the book); DIARY is a clever, delightful romantic comedy guaranteed to please old fans and win new ones.

Full review
The film, 'Bridget Jones's Diary' stars Renee Zellweger, as Bridget Jones, Hugh Grant, as Daniel Cleaver, Bridget Jones's Boss and potential Love Interest, and Colin Firth, as Mark Darcy, Bridget's other potential love interest. The film feature fantastic performaces from these actors, as well as other characters, who are also portrayed fantastically!

Renee Zellweger plays Bridget excellently and I couldn't believe it the other day when I found out she was actually American!

The film is directed by the same people who directed 'About a Boy'. 'Love Actually' and 'Notting Hill' and 'Four Weddings and Funeral'. so you can expect all the same quailities from this film, as you got from those ones.

The film tells the story of Bridget Jones (who every female I know can relate to in some way or another), and the diary she keeps, detailing what happens in one year of her life.

I always like watching films that have been made from a book, it usually makes the book easier to read, - I know it's the wrong way round but I find it hard to get into books unless I have a bit of background knowledge!

I enjoyed the film, because Bridget Jones is a character that, as a female, I can totally relate to! Renee Zellweger portrays this character excellently, as she is funny and more or less states the opinions and thoughts of every female between the ages of 18 and 35! As I said previously, she is not the only strong character in this film, - the film is packed with them, and here are just a few that struck a chord with me:

Daniel: Bridget's love interest and boss. Played by Hugh Grant, this man is amazingly attractive, but unbelievably shallow! He has feelings for Bridget, but can't communicate them, and only really cares about himself!

Mark Darcy: Plyaed by Colin Firth, he doesn't seem to be much of a character at first, but as Bridget falls in love with him, you realise what a nice and geneuine character he is.

Bridget's Mother: This woman displays the typical feelings of a bored housewife who wants to have fun and has felt life has passed her by. When she is introduced into the film, she is described as being 'a strange creature from the time where mini guerkins were the height of sophistication'. In short, she eventually runs off with a man called Julian from a home shopping channel, who is 'very orange' (due to more and more fake tan in every scene!). However, she eventually sees sense(and how orange 'Jaundiced Julian' really is), and goes back to her husnband, and Bridget's father, who is not a particularly amazing character, but fits his stereotype very well. He is also played by the same person that played 'Slater' in Only Fools and Horses, which I didn't realise until it was pointed out to me.

Perpetua: This is someone who Bridget works with and can't stand, and fits whatever thoughts come into your mind when you think what someone with a name like this would be like!

Funniest Moments: There have been so many funny moments in this film, and I can guarantee that the minute i click 'send' on this review, I will have thought of about a million more, but here are the ones that automatically spring to mind...

After leaving the publishing house, where she worked with Daniel Cleaver, Bridget gets a job in television, for a programme called 'Sit Up Britain'. She is asked to go to a fire station and give a report on something (can't remember what now!). Before giving the report, she is asked to come down on a fireman's pole to greet the camera and her audience. However, not being the most eloquent of people, she comes down the pole, showing her knickers and bum to the world!

Bridget is asked to present the presenter at a book launch. The presenter is a man called Mr Fitzherbert, who Bridget nicknames 'Mr Tits- Pervert'. She first of all can't switch on the microphone, so she gets the attention of the audience by shouting'Oy!'. She then starts going on about the book being 'The Best book of our time', but then sees several other authors, who she doesn't want to offend, so she ends up summarising the book as being in the Top 30 books of all time. She then presents Mr Fitzhernert as being 'the man we all call Mr Fitzherbert, because,. because, that is his name.' Mr Fitzherbert than walks onto the stage and switched the microphone on! That was just a perfect example of Bridget making an idiot of herself, which she does throughout the film, which, everytime is incredibly funny!

It's Bridget's Birthday and she decides to cook a meal for her friends, but when tying one of the vegetables for the soup she is making, she uses blue string, making the soup blue, she also makes a dessert that ends up just like Marmalade!

I'm sure I haven't covered enough in this review, but if I went into every bit of the film that I enjoyed then you wouldn't have to get the film out, as I would have described every part of the film in great deal! Thats if you haven't seen the film, and I don't know anyone that hasn't seen it! I'm not a great film person, but this has to go down as a great classic, especially for anyone who likes a Britsh film with all the 'usual British stars and the typical romantic comedy genre!
