In the screen adaptation of BRIDGET JONES'S DIARY, Helen Fielding's international best-selling phenomenon, documentary filmmaker (and real-life inspiration for the character...
more...Shazzer) Sharon Maguire has managed a rare feat - a film as captivating as the novel. Bridget Jones (Renee Zellweger) is a pretty and neurotic thirtysomething singleton (in her vernacular) who vows to take control of her life after being humiliated by handsome, standoffish barrister, Mark Darcy (Colin Firth) at her parents' New Year's party. Determined to lose weight and cut back on vices like wine, cigarettes, and workaholic-alcoholic-misogynistic men, Bridget begins a diary to chart her progress. Unfortunately, the P.R. executive hits a snag when her boss, gorgeous cad Daniel (Hugh Grant) instigates a sexy e-mail flirtation. Despite her tendency to bungle book launch parties, and any situation involving the ever-present, ever-disapproving Mark Darcy, Bridget's winning combination of charm, vulnerability, and wit intrigues not only the seductively dangerous Daniel, but also the arrogant barrister. Featuring a note-perfect performance by Zellweger, a devilishly against-type one by Grant, and the inspired casting of Firth (the object of Bridget's lusty fantasies in the book); DIARY is a clever, delightful romantic comedy guaranteed to please old fans and win new ones.

On New Year's Day 30 something, Bridget Jones, decides to change her single status and to keep a diary while she is at it.

First, she resolves to lose 20 pounds, and find a nice boyfriend who isn't a 'pervert, a peeping-tom or an emotional f***wit'.

The very British Bridget Jones is played by American actress Renee Zellweger. Renee had to do a lot of homework before she turned herself into Bridget. She worked part time in a publishers office. The idea was that if she could fool her work colleagues into believing she was a typically English girl, she would be able to convince the viewers.

There's a choice to be made between two men. Bridget's search for the 'perfect' mate leads her into the arms of bad boy Daniel Cleaver, (played by the delightful Hugh Grant). This liaison ends when Daniel is caught with another woman in his bathroom.

Next, it's the turn of Mark Darcy (played by Colin Frith). Mr Darcy is not initially to Bridget's taste but he turns out to be 'the one'.

The plot of this film comes from the book written by Helen Fielding who borrowed it from Jane Austen's 'Pride and Prejudice'. Even the name of the hero is the same. Colin Frith also played Mr Darcy in the BBC version of 'Pride and Prejudice'.

This is a very funny film from the same 'stable' as 'Nottinghill' and 'Four Weddings and a Funeral'.

I haven't said much about the soundtrack on this film because it is not remarkable in any way. The music made no impression on me at all.

If you haven't seen this film it's worth getting on video or dvd (now much lower in price as it is an 'oldie' as today's films go...you can buy it for 4.99).

Suitable for adults and older teenagers but I wouldn't recommend that you show it to you very staid maiden aunt, or to anyone who might be offended at the frequent use of four letter swear words.

My favourite bit from the whole film is where Hugh Grant is sitting in a rowing boat on the river reciting a poem:

There once was a lady from Ealing,
Who had an incredible feeling,
She laid on her back........................

No, I won't spoil it for you!
