In the screen adaptation of BRIDGET JONES'S DIARY, Helen Fielding's international best-selling phenomenon, documentary filmmaker (and real-life inspiration for the character...
more...Shazzer) Sharon Maguire has managed a rare feat - a film as captivating as the novel. Bridget Jones (Renee Zellweger) is a pretty and neurotic thirtysomething singleton (in her vernacular) who vows to take control of her life after being humiliated by handsome, standoffish barrister, Mark Darcy (Colin Firth) at her parents' New Year's party. Determined to lose weight and cut back on vices like wine, cigarettes, and workaholic-alcoholic-misogynistic men, Bridget begins a diary to chart her progress. Unfortunately, the P.R. executive hits a snag when her boss, gorgeous cad Daniel (Hugh Grant) instigates a sexy e-mail flirtation. Despite her tendency to bungle book launch parties, and any situation involving the ever-present, ever-disapproving Mark Darcy, Bridget's winning combination of charm, vulnerability, and wit intrigues not only the seductively dangerous Daniel, but also the arrogant barrister. Featuring a note-perfect performance by Zellweger, a devilishly against-type one by Grant, and the inspired casting of Firth (the object of Bridget's lusty fantasies in the book); DIARY is a clever, delightful romantic comedy guaranteed to please old fans and win new ones.

Full review
This film is based on Helen Fielding's bestselling novel. It stars hugely funny brilliant actor, Renee Zellweger, sexy Hugh Grant and pride and prejudice's Coin Firth.

Bridget Jones (Zellweger) is a thirty-something single girl who can't seem to find the perfect man, job, or life quite frankly. Like the book, the film is based around Bridget's diary entries, and therefore gives a first person view of her life - with all the grim and funny details!

Her diary starts, strangely enough, on New Years Day, with resolutions not far off of those I and many of my friends have previously made - to lose weight, drink less and find a boyfriend who is not a 'peeping tom, megiomaniac, emotional f***wit or pervert'. I am sure many women reading this can already identify with Bridget. This is one of the great strengths of the film. You can identify with at least one aspect of Bridget's life and experiences.

The film is highly funny, including seens of Bridget sliding down a firemans pole and revealing her arse on national tv; drunken behaviour; countless self help books and cookery disasters - proving that not all of us women are as good cooks as men think. Bridget tries to cook for her friends and ends up with blue soup! Which everyone then pretends to enjoy throughout fits of laughter.

She is constantly calorie counting and every entry in her diary summarises calories, fags and alcohol units consumed. To hide her extra weight, Bridget is a fan of big granny style knickers - revealed in a steamy encounter with Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant).

Despite Bridget's problem with getting a man, she ends up torn between sexy, egotistic womaniser boss Daniel and thoughtful, sensitive Mark Darcy (Colin Firth). The choice, you may be thinking, is simple, yet we women always fall for the wrong guys, so why should Bridget be any different. I am not going to ruin the plot and tell you who she ends up with - you will have to watch it.

I have left the funniest scene (in my opinion anyway) until the end. Bridget does something which many of us would love to do at least once in our lives. She quits her job in the best manner possible - insulting her boss in a most degrading way, in front of the entire office! Never fails to make me laugh.

It is the funniest film released in a long time and I would definitely recommend it.
