In the screen adaptation of BRIDGET JONES'S DIARY, Helen Fielding's international best-selling phenomenon, documentary filmmaker (and real-life inspiration for the character...
more...Shazzer) Sharon Maguire has managed a rare feat - a film as captivating as the novel. Bridget Jones (Renee Zellweger) is a pretty and neurotic thirtysomething singleton (in her vernacular) who vows to take control of her life after being humiliated by handsome, standoffish barrister, Mark Darcy (Colin Firth) at her parents' New Year's party. Determined to lose weight and cut back on vices like wine, cigarettes, and workaholic-alcoholic-misogynistic men, Bridget begins a diary to chart her progress. Unfortunately, the P.R. executive hits a snag when her boss, gorgeous cad Daniel (Hugh Grant) instigates a sexy e-mail flirtation. Despite her tendency to bungle book launch parties, and any situation involving the ever-present, ever-disapproving Mark Darcy, Bridget's winning combination of charm, vulnerability, and wit intrigues not only the seductively dangerous Daniel, but also the arrogant barrister. Featuring a note-perfect performance by Zellweger, a devilishly against-type one by Grant, and the inspired casting of Firth (the object of Bridget's lusty fantasies in the book); DIARY is a clever, delightful romantic comedy guaranteed to please old fans and win new ones.

Now this op is about the film as opposed to the book by Helen Fielding, which I am in the middle of reading at the moment, so look out for that op soon!!

We have the DVD which includes commentary by director, Sharon Maguire, behind the scenes featurette, Bridget Jones Articles featurette, Deleted scenes and two music videos. All of which are pretty good in my opinion.

Now for those who don't know anything about this film, it stars Renee Zellweger an American actress who had to put on weight to star in this film. I thought she actually looked better than she does today (having lost all of the weight she put on and more!), Hugh Grant (who I don't like at all) and Colin Firth (who in my honest opinion reminds me of Hugh Grant but I prefer Colin).

Renee Zellweger plays the lead role Miss Bridget Jones, and seeing as this is her diary she doesn't actually write much in it. Bridget works for Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant) in a publishing company. Then along comes Mark Darcy (Colin Firth) and basically Bridget has to choose between them both.

So who will she choose, will it be the bona-fide-sex-god-with-big-car DANIEL CLEAVER or aloof-looking-but-thoughtful-sensitive-man Mark Darcy.

Well I don't want to spoil the plot for anyone still wanting to watch this brilliant film as this is one of my all time favourite films, hence the reason I am reading the book (and I've been told its even better than the film) its a laugh a minute with lots of swear words and partial nudity so is classified a 15.

I like the co-stars, her mum, played by Gemma Jones, a rather nerotic woman you can see where Bridget gets it from, and dad, played by Jim Broadbent, and her friends, one of whom says the F word rather a lot but its very funny so can be excused and one is a gay man who once had a one hit wonder in the eighties.

Near the beginning of the film she starts passing emails to Daniel Cleaver because of what he calls "her non existent skirt" this is actually a very memorable part of the film. Likewise the fight scene on her birthday, hilarious! Other truly side splitting scenes include the Blue soup one (you'll have to watch it to find out about that) and the big granny knickers one (again you must watch to see what I mean) and there are lots of others.

All the way through this film, which is a year in Bridget's life she worries about her weight, job, calories eaten, alcohol consumed and cigarettes smoked. She also worries about her single status.

This film is along the lines of Notting Hill and Four Weddings and a funeral and is funnily enough made by the makers of these films. In my opinion it is just as good and even though I don't like Hugh Grant I have actually watched all of these films.

So if you like Renee Zellweger (who was in Jerry Maguire and me myself and Irene) Hugh Grant (who was in Four weddings and Notting Hill) or Colin Firth (who was in Pride and prejudice and Fever Pitch) you should watch this film. But if you are like me and are not fussed by any of these big names but like romantic comedies then you should still watch this excellent film. Its a laugh (or two) a minute.

The other thing to mention is the soundtrack which is most excellent and when it includes artists like Robbie Williams and Geri Halliwell, how could it not be??

You might think that this is rather too girlie for you blokes to watch but my hubby had to sit through it with me and he actually admitted to liking it at the end, if he had said anything else I would have known he was lying due to the fact that he was laughing almost as much as I was!!

Thanks for reading, take care and happy film watching.

Amanda
