In the screen adaptation of BRIDGET JONES'S DIARY, Helen Fielding's international best-selling phenomenon, documentary filmmaker (and real-life inspiration for the character...
more...Shazzer) Sharon Maguire has managed a rare feat - a film as captivating as the novel. Bridget Jones (Renee Zellweger) is a pretty and neurotic thirtysomething singleton (in her vernacular) who vows to take control of her life after being humiliated by handsome, standoffish barrister, Mark Darcy (Colin Firth) at her parents' New Year's party. Determined to lose weight and cut back on vices like wine, cigarettes, and workaholic-alcoholic-misogynistic men, Bridget begins a diary to chart her progress. Unfortunately, the P.R. executive hits a snag when her boss, gorgeous cad Daniel (Hugh Grant) instigates a sexy e-mail flirtation. Despite her tendency to bungle book launch parties, and any situation involving the ever-present, ever-disapproving Mark Darcy, Bridget's winning combination of charm, vulnerability, and wit intrigues not only the seductively dangerous Daniel, but also the arrogant barrister. Featuring a note-perfect performance by Zellweger, a devilishly against-type one by Grant, and the inspired casting of Firth (the object of Bridget's lusty fantasies in the book); DIARY is a clever, delightful romantic comedy guaranteed to please old fans and win new ones.

The funniest thing about this film for me was that my grandparents took me too see it since, after Colin Firth in Pride and Prejudice, and Hugh Grant in Four Weddings and a Funeral, my Gran made the mistake of thinking it would be a nice "family film". Wrong. And good job too, because I can't stand those boring snorathon films. Instead I was the only one in the cinema who actually got the jokes, since it was a Friday afternoon showing, and everyone else was either too young or too old to understand the innuendos. So I wound up asking myself: "Hey, was that MEANT to be funny, or is it just my filthy mind again?!"
But I ended up enjoying the film so much that I bought it on video, and with it got 35minutes of extra bonus footage, like the cutout scenes, which are almost better than those that were kept in the film. This, I reckon, has got to be the film's one major flaw. Like, the actress who plays Magda, Bridget's married friend, actually has some lines in the film believe it or not...all her scenes just got cut out. Which is a shame, cos if you've read the books you'll know that Magda can be a pretty amusing character.
However, I still rate the film as one of the best I've seen in my life, with memorable moments like that highly unfortunate slide down the fireman's pole, and hysterical bits like "Have It Oeuf" and the scene where Bridget leaves her job and dresses Daniel down in front of the whole office. Or maybe it's the romance with Mark where she chases him down the street in just a vest top and leopardprint knickers! Whatever it is, this film has something that all women can relate to, and even my guy mates laugh when Daniel and Mark have the punch up, so I rest my case on this being possibly the best film about women ever made, and one of the funniest and wittiest of our time. Rent it today, or better yet buy it and watch the deleted scenes PLUS interviews with Hugh Grant and Colin Firth...yummeeeeeeeeeeeee! ;)
