In the screen adaptation of BRIDGET JONES'S DIARY, Helen Fielding's international best-selling phenomenon, documentary filmmaker (and real-life inspiration for the character...
more...Shazzer) Sharon Maguire has managed a rare feat - a film as captivating as the novel. Bridget Jones (Renee Zellweger) is a pretty and neurotic thirtysomething singleton (in her vernacular) who vows to take control of her life after being humiliated by handsome, standoffish barrister, Mark Darcy (Colin Firth) at her parents' New Year's party. Determined to lose weight and cut back on vices like wine, cigarettes, and workaholic-alcoholic-misogynistic men, Bridget begins a diary to chart her progress. Unfortunately, the P.R. executive hits a snag when her boss, gorgeous cad Daniel (Hugh Grant) instigates a sexy e-mail flirtation. Despite her tendency to bungle book launch parties, and any situation involving the ever-present, ever-disapproving Mark Darcy, Bridget's winning combination of charm, vulnerability, and wit intrigues not only the seductively dangerous Daniel, but also the arrogant barrister. Featuring a note-perfect performance by Zellweger, a devilishly against-type one by Grant, and the inspired casting of Firth (the object of Bridget's lusty fantasies in the book); DIARY is a clever, delightful romantic comedy guaranteed to please old fans and win new ones.

I am sure that any woman who watches ‘Bridget Jones’s Diary’ will, at some point, relate to the character.

With me, it was when she got on the scales and she was the same weight as myself! There was the big pants scene too which rang a few bells, you know your stomach looks so much better in your big ‘pull-everything-in’ pants but do you want to risk it, when you’re with your new love and tonight maybe the night!?

I hadn’t read the book before I went, although I may do now, so I had no idea what the film was going to be about.

It followed a year in the life of Bridget Jones, she is a little ‘pudgy’ not over weight just well rounded, she is without a man, smokes, drinks and is on a permanent yet at the same time none existent diet.

Basically the film tracks Bridget’s involvement with two men, the childhood friend and the office hunk.

It tracks her life through, meeting back up with the old childhood friend (whose paddling pool she used to play in – naked) at her mom’s Christmas party (played by Colin Firth, initially in the daftest jumper in cinema history) and her getting it together with office lothario (Hugh Grant) and believe all his stories (as we women do with the ‘wrong’ men don’t we?)

The film sees these two relationships form, change, end (and maybe begin again – but that would spoil it!) Set against the backdrop of her changing career, her mom having an affair with a Shopping Channel presenter with an orange tan, her dad just being depressed, and her friends rallying round. Although people say her friends play a more active part in the book.

My favourite scenes were;

Bridget sat in her flat, on her own, a little drunk, smoking and singing her head off to the CD player – now none of us do that do we?

The emailing scenes in the office, as that too was true to life, how many times have you and a friend exchanged mails at work, even though you are 3 metres away from each other, trying not to chuckle to yourself.

And running down the road in her underwear, personally I can’t say I can relate to this one, but it was funny nonetheless.

I thoroughly enjoyed the film and shall watch it again on video and TV when it does the rounds, it made me laugh, cry and cry with laughter too.

I took my partner, who was not looking forward to it, as he thought it was a ‘chick flick’ but I think he laughed louder and harder than me. Mmmm…maybe he was just relating it to me? Now there’s a thought!

If you do go and see it, don’t stand up to leave immediately as there are more funnies during the credits.

I was reading in a magazine about the three main actors in it, and how Renee Zellwegger had been chomping and pies and chocolate and drinking Guiness to get to the correct weight for it, whilst Firth and Grant had been going to the gym and cutting out fattening things to try to make themselves more hunky. Funny!

I also saw Renee on the awards ceremony, with her normal American accent (she does an excellent British one!) and her new slight figure, she looked fab.

Now if she can loose the weight so can I....
