In the screen adaptation of BRIDGET JONES'S DIARY, Helen Fielding's international best-selling phenomenon, documentary filmmaker (and real-life inspiration for the character...
more...Shazzer) Sharon Maguire has managed a rare feat - a film as captivating as the novel. Bridget Jones (Renee Zellweger) is a pretty and neurotic thirtysomething singleton (in her vernacular) who vows to take control of her life after being humiliated by handsome, standoffish barrister, Mark Darcy (Colin Firth) at her parents' New Year's party. Determined to lose weight and cut back on vices like wine, cigarettes, and workaholic-alcoholic-misogynistic men, Bridget begins a diary to chart her progress. Unfortunately, the P.R. executive hits a snag when her boss, gorgeous cad Daniel (Hugh Grant) instigates a sexy e-mail flirtation. Despite her tendency to bungle book launch parties, and any situation involving the ever-present, ever-disapproving Mark Darcy, Bridget's winning combination of charm, vulnerability, and wit intrigues not only the seductively dangerous Daniel, but also the arrogant barrister. Featuring a note-perfect performance by Zellweger, a devilishly against-type one by Grant, and the inspired casting of Firth (the object of Bridget's lusty fantasies in the book); DIARY is a clever, delightful romantic comedy guaranteed to please old fans and win new ones.

Full review
Bridget Jones's Diary is a screen adaptation of the top selling book of the same name which will probably be familiar to most of the female Ciaoers.Bridget is played by Renee Zellweger & having read the book & the sequel The Edge of reason,is nothing like the woman I had built up a mental image of.Bridget is a thirty something calorie obsessed, cigarette smoking, chardonnay swigging "singleton"(although its vodka she swills in the movie)who works in publishing,is clumsy & appallingly bad at public speaking.
Her parents are desperate to marry her off and introduce her to Mark Darcey played by Colin Firth.Of course,Mark is Mr.Sensible & Bridget is far more interested in flirting outrageuosly with her boss,Daniel Cleaver, played superbly by the gorgeous Hugh Grant.
I was a bit dubious of Hugh Grant playing the bad guy as we are all so used to seeing him playing the goodie but he was absolutely fantastic as sex god Daniel Cleaver and as well as Bridget,I found myself falling for the charms of her dirty boss.
Renee is actually American but her English accent is very convincing, she is very much the girl next door,English Rose type. There is something in her character we can all identify with,I'm sure. She keeps this diary listing her weight, cigarettes smoked & alcohol units consumed in a day.
The story is based upon her quest for love and of course, centres upon her two love rivals, sleazy but utterley sexy Daniel & sensible, reliable Mark. There is a brilliant fight between them which was the best part of the film, where they brawl out in the street & end up fighting inside a restaurant and come flying through the restaurant window.
I won't spoil it & say who gets the girl but those of you who have read the book will already know!
I did enjy the film and one thing I did notice was that 90% of the audience were female(its definately one to go & see with the girls).
I did enjoy the second book more, though(The Edge of reason)which was very cleverly written by Helen Fielding.Definately worth seeing, especially if you enjoyed the book, are a Hugh Grant fan or have ever been thirty something & single!
