onto the cover of this 19-track soundtrack), bringing hope to lonely souls all over the country and a word of warning to smug marrieds everywhere. For what should be called "the best chick flick in the world...ever!" the soundtrack compilers have come up with a dream tracklist--from classics such as Aretha Franklin's "Respect", Jamie O'Neal's tearjerker "All By Myself" and Andy Williams' "Can't Take My Eyes Off You", to more contemporary gems from the likes of Gabrielle ("Out of Reach"), The Pretenders ("Don't Get Me Wrong") and Artful Dodger ("Woman Trouble"). Plus you get the added bonus of two unreleased Robbie Williams tracks--the big-band stylings of "Have You Met Miss Jones?" and the tender "Not of this Earth"--and, of course, the much-hyped karaoke-by-numbers of "It's Raining Men" by Geri Halliwell and her pants. There are a couple of fillers from Rosey and Alisha's Attic, but they don't distract too much from the generally choice tracks on offer. As Bridget would say, "v. good". --Helen Marquis

affair--subtitled "More Music From the Film and Other V.G. Songs", it could be seen to be somewhat stretching the loyalty of wannabe Bridgets everywhere. But then again, when it includes such a great line-up of tracks, it would be churlish to complain. The two glaring omissions from Volume 1 put in a very welcome appearance, namely Van Morrison's "Someone Like You" and Nilsson's "Without You" (albeit without Bridget's somewhat over-exuberant backing vocals), along with the original version of Robbie's "Me and Mrs Jones" by the Dramatics and an acoustic version of the Gabrielle hit "Out of Reach". Nestling comfortably alongside them are a wealth of tracks for the modern singleton--empowerment in the form of En Vogue's "My Lovin' (You're Never Gonna Get It)", feel-good sentiments from McAlmont and Butler's "Yes" and a good bit of wallowing courtesy of Yvonne Fair's "It Should Have Been Me". The only things that are missing are the free bottle of Chardonnay and the big pants. --Helen Marquis

The movie is based on a 1966 novel that was written in the form of a journal. Having read the journal, I can easily say that this film is one of the rare ones that differed from the book in terms of style and setting, but still managed to remain true to the spirit of the book as whole. In fact, I believe that Bridget Jones’ Diary came out at a time when all chick flicks were starting to resemble each other: varying degrees of Pretty Woman metamorphoses with nearly the same plot. I think that the originality and difference between the storyline of Bridget Jones served in helping it become such a masterpiece, and one of my favorite movies from my collection of chick flicks.
Plot:
Bridget Jones is single, 30 year old, chubby, and depends way too much on alcohol and cigarettes. Fed up with the life that she is leading, Bridget decides to turn the tables around and try and get a grip on her life. At her parents’ party, Bridget is introduced to the arrogant and rude Mark Darcy whom she nearly immediately takes a dislike to. Meanwhile, her handsome and charismatic boss, Daniel Cleaver starts sending her some saucy emails…
I think the plot is more than obvious to show that this holds the typical ingredients for a well-baked chick flick. But what makes this movie differ from the others basically starts with the acting. I was genuinely very impressed by the excellent performances in the film. Renée Zellweger was so much more than exceptional: She did represent to me, the typical average woman. There was not a single scene where she slipped out of the character of Bridget Jones, every single line delivery and facial expression remained extremely precise and accurate to her character. In addition, I was totally baffled to hear her speak with a British accent. She is an American and one can only imagine the hard work and dedication behind learning (and mastering) a new accent while staying so extremely focused upon her role. I have watched other films with Renée Zellweger after Bridget Jones and I have to say that this was the movie in which she delivered her best performance till date. I really have no idea how she managed to bring such freshness to the plot, but I can easily say that she acted a lot better than some of these more experienced actors out there.
Hugh Grant and Colin Firth played Daniel Cleaver and Mark Darcy respectively. While I do have to say that they were somewhat overshadowed by Renée Zellweger’s excellent performance in the film, these two actors also seemed very much at ease with their roles. What I most particularly liked was the way that they managed to depict a great on-screen rivalry chemistry between their characters: Since the movie itself introduces two men and a woman from the start, the audience very easily feels the rivalry between Daniel and Mark, and this is enhanced by the very subtle assumptions in the film. Hugh Grant and Colin Firth did not have many scenes together; they only had very brief encounters with in the film and barely addressed or acknowledged each other. Yet, despite the obvious lack of contact between their characters, they did manage to somehow add quite an electric atmosphere to the scenes and I do believe that they did a brilliant job in contrasting and comparing each other for the sake of the audience.
Even the plot was great in this film! What I loved the most is the atypical, albeit wonderful blend of realism and escapism in the film. I think that the movie reflected the perfect balance between where escapism should end and where realism should not be taken to the extreme. When I personally watch an overly realistic film, I keep wondering where the idea of entertaining the audience disappeared to. In retrospect, when I watch a movie that is packed full with extreme escapism, I keep lamenting that it was not realistic enough for my taste. I have to admit that I have absolutely no complaints on this ground for Bridget Jone’s Diary. It was endearing, yet realistic, and still managed to grab to that special fairytale like feeling.
I also have to say that for once, even the supporting/minor actors were extremely at ease with their roles. I think that this is one of these movies that really do contain a lot of talent from nearly every single actor, irrespective of role importance. It is just sad that this film did not really have the success it rightfully deserves. I do have to add that even the dialogue remained fresh and light, with some really hilarious one-liners thrown in from time to time.
The main cast includes: • Renée Zellweger • Hugh Grant • Colin Firth • Gemma Jones • Jim Broadbent
DVD Bonus features: • Commentary tracks • Behind the scenes Featurettes • Music Videos • Deleted Scenes
I enjoyed all the bonus tracks but I particularly recommend the deleted scenes: They certainly are hilarious! I just wish my DVD had an outtakes/goof sections for additional laughs.
Overall, very, very highly recommended. It seems to be aimed at a female audience but lots of my male friends enjoyed the movie too.
Advantages: Renee Zellweger Disadvantages: Limp translation of book to film
Sharon Maguire's BRIDGET JONES'S DIARY was released in 2001 after phenomenal success from Helen Fielding's book, as if anyone needs telling, of the same name. The book is an immensely enjoyable read, a book that throws you head first into someone else's secret diary of a life you can't help but squirm to as you relate to it all. The film, then, was much anticipated.

Advantages: Amusing comic escapism Disadvantages: If you're picky, not the best adaptation of the book possible. My 4 star rating is because I like my films to be perfect (I'm fussy like that)!
...been a fan of the Bridget Jones diaries from first appearing as a feature in the Independent through to the Edge of Reason, I couldn't really miss out on the opportunity to see the film. Having read the critics reviews, I was unsure as to what to expect. Apparently it was a "good film, but not for the die-hards". The challenge was set, so off I went.
I was initially worried as to the overall girlieness of the film. Although I am a girly, I'm not ... ...be more likely to describe Bridget Jone's diary as a comedy which has fundaments in romance (or the lack of).
The written Jones's diary is very formulaic. It commences with statistics of the day, e.g. "9st 2, Fags:37, No. of times dialled 1471: 42, No. of times have thought about cream cake in fridge: 17". The film is less 'factual' in this respect, for obvious reasons, but loses little of the panache in forsaking this format.
It starts with why ...

...For the uninitiated amongst you, Bridget Jones was created by author Helen Fielding, and brought to life on the big screen by American actress Renee Zellwegger. Bridget is a single thirtysomething, obsessed with her weight, quitting drinking and smoking, but mostly with finding Mr Right. In order to try and find some order in her life, she has started to keep a diary to record the events in her life, hence the title of the film. As the film progresses, ... ...is spot on. Bridget secretly lusts after her boss, PR supremo Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant), and one night he reciprocates her lustful glances, and they end up having sex. This starts Bridget off on a fruitless endeavour to get him to commit, and look at their relationship as a long term proposition. He does not, and she is humiliated to find he is engaged to be married. The 3rd person in the triangle is Mark Darcy (Colin Firth), who surprisingly has ...

Introduction
I have read both these books and when I heard they were making the first BridgetJones's Diary I knew it would be a film that I would enjoy. Once I had seen the first film I heard about the second one being made and I just could not wait to see how that one would turn out.
BridgetJones's Diary - The Plot
Bridget is in her early 30's and single. Bridget is so sick of her life that she decides the only way to turn it around is to keep a diary; she comes to this decision after attending her Mother's annual Turkey Curry Buffet.
At the Buffet Bridget is introduced to Mark Darcy, a divorced human rights barrister who just happens to be wearing the most appalling jumper and quickly dismisses Bridget as a potential love interest, which poor Bridget over hears.

Advantages: the funniest film oout of the two yet Disadvantages: a little similar to the last one
She?s back and she?s better than ever. Yes its BridgetJonesdiary. For those people who haven?t seen this follow up film, I recommend that you all go and see it because it is the best film of the year. If you?ve had a stressful day, order in a takeaway, chill, sit back, relax and watch this film and laugh yourself silly! Starring the same cast members plus other new extras that you?ve seen on TV or in Hollywood.
The plot
Well, in the last film, Bridget (Renee Zellweger) got it together with mark Darcy (Colin firth), the high respectable lawyer, after a rough time with Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant) her cheating, sex mad ex boyfriend and old boss. So this basically carries on from the last film, but in this one, there are more laugh out loud embarrassing moments, and more problems and hurdles she has to overcome.
It starts off ...
Advantages: 1st films good. Disadvantages: 2nd film's not so good.
I've seen both films and read both books and I can say they'll all worth watching/reading. The second film & 1st book are slightly a bit of a let down, but still fun to read/watch over all.
BridgetJones's Diary 1:
This film starts off with a 30 something Bridget going to her parents house (which is set near where I live) and her talking about her life in a narrated form. Bridget played by the wonderful Renee Zellweger is set up again by her mother, but this year it happends to be the hot Mark Darcy (Colin Firth) wearing a terrible jumper his mother gave him. He says something horrible like "Epesially not someone who drinks like a fish, smokes like a chimney & dresses like her mother" which is a classic line.
When this film was made into a movie, there was a lot of stick that they used an American to play Bridget, but it ...
