best-selling phenomenon, documentary filmmaker (and real-life inspiration for the character Shazzer) Sharon Maguire has managed a rare feat--a film as captivating as the novel. Bridget Jones (Renee Zellweger) is a pretty and neurotic thirtysomething singleton (in her vernacular) who vows to take control of her life after being humiliated by handsome, standoffish barrister, Mark Darcy (Colin Firth) at her parents' New Year's party. Determined to lose weight and cut back on vices like wine, cigarettes, and workaholic-alcoholic-misogynistic men, Bridget begins a diary to chart her progress. Unfortunately, the P.R. executive hits a snag when her boss, gorgeous cad Daniel (Hugh Grant) instigates a sexy e-mail flirtation. Despite her tendency to bungle book launch parties, and any situation involving the ever-present, ever-disapproving Mark Darcy, Bridget's winning combination of charm, vulnerability, and wit intrigues not only the seductively dangerous Daniel, but also the arrogant barrister. Featuring a note-perfect performance by Zellweger, a devilishly against-type one by Grant, and the inspired casting of Firth (the object of Bridget's lusty fantasies in the book); DIARY is a clever, delightful romantic comedy guaranteed to please old fans and win new ones.n
Advantages: Renee Zellweger Disadvantages: Limp translation of book to film
Sharon Maguire's BRIDGET JONES'S DIARY was released in 2001 after phenomenal success from Helen Fielding's book, as if anyone needs telling, of the same name. The book is an immensely enjoyable read, a book that throws you head first into someone else's secret diary of a life you can't help but squirm to as you relate to it all. The film, then, was much anticipated.
Bridget Jones is a thirty-onwards year old London disaster area. There should be ... ...to lose interest In Bridget, Bridget changes job and Mr. Darcy reappears, not so passionless, it seems, after all. Daniel tells Bridget he wants her back, consequently he and Mr. Darcy declare war on each other and all of a sudden Uncle Buck has two boyfriends fighting over her.
What more can be said about BRIDGET JONES'S DIARY? I am sick of hearing about it, sick of the sight of it on supermarket shelves, exhausted at the sight of one hundred thousand ...

...woman called -you guessed it- Bridget Jones. She decides, after realising how sad her life is to change it for the better. She proposes to go on a diet, stop smoking, stop drinking and find a man (not too much to ask then!), she starts a diary to record her progress in- which is why the film is called Bridget Jones's Diary.
I don't want to spoil the film for any people who haven't watched it yet by saying what happens, so I won't- I’ll just ... ...(but funny) things happen to Bridget that can happen to normal people- (this makes a nice change from most films that normally have completely unrealistic things happening). I found one of the funniest parts of the film the part where Bridget tries to make diner for her friends- every course goes badly wrong and the celery soup ends up blue!
The film has a great sound track-, which includes songs from Robbie Williams, Gabrielle and Geri Halliwell ...

Advantages: Amusing comic escapism Disadvantages: If you're picky, not the best adaptation of the book possible. My 4 star rating is because I like my films to be perfect (I'm fussy like that)!
...been a fan of the Bridget Jones diaries from first appearing as a feature in the Independent through to the Edge of Reason, I couldn't really miss out on the opportunity to see the film. Having read the critics reviews, I was unsure as to what to expect. Apparently it was a "good film, but not for the die-hards". The challenge was set, so off I went.
I was initially worried as to the overall girlieness of the film. Although I am a girly, I'm not ... ...be more likely to describe Bridget Jone's diary as a comedy which has fundaments in romance (or the lack of).
The written Jones's diary is very formulaic. It commences with statistics of the day, e.g. "9st 2, Fags:37, No. of times dialled 1471: 42, No. of times have thought about cream cake in fridge: 17". The film is less 'factual' in this respect, for obvious reasons, but loses little of the panache in forsaking this format.
It starts with why ...

...year in the life of Bridget Jones, a publicist who lives in London, is single, and dreams of being thinner and finding the right man. Bridget records in her diary all her weight fluctuations and romantic encounters during the year. The diary starts with Bridget vowing to lose some weight and find a nice man during the next twelve months.
While attending a party, Bridget’s mother attempts to set her up with Mark Darcy, an attractive lawyer. Darcy ... ...For now anyway. Instead, Bridget gets involved with her bad-boy boss, Daniel Cleaver. Cleaver is much more forthcoming and appears almost too good to be true. Their relationship is fun filled and touching but there is something that is not quite right. Mark Darcy is never far from the action and Bridget feels like she may have judged Mark too harshly. Which man will she choose?
