It would be difficult to top the phenomenal success of BRIDGET JONES' DIARY, but the sequel certainly pulls it off. The incomparable Renee Zellweger (JERRY MACGUIRE, COLD MOUNTAIN)...
more...once again breathes hilarious life into the flawed heroine who sent her career soaring. This instalment of Bridget's journal finds her dealing with the growing pains of a new relationship with Mark Darcy, her crush from the first film (stilted but passionate Colin Firth). Though wildly in love with him, Bridget, a TV producer, worries off and on that Mark and his stuffy attorney crowd may not be quite her cup of tea. When she attends an important law function as Mark's date, she manages to embarrass herself and offend his snobby colleagues. To top it off, Mark's gorgeous and willowy co-worker Rebecca (Jacinda Barrett) seems to have a knack for showing up at just the wrong time. When Bridget finally asks Mark outright if he's having an affair with the leggy Rebecca, he refuses to answer. Bridget jets off in a huff, and it appears the relationship is officially on the rocks. To further complicate matters, her cute and caddish former love Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant) asks her to join him on-location in Thailand for a TV shoot--another chance at romance for Bridget Jones. Zellweger makes the film completely her own, and provides some quintessential 'Bridget' moments--Bridget trying to walk up a flight of stairs in heels, Bridget careening down a mountain on skis, or Bridget tripping on magic mushrooms on a Thai beach. Brilliantly rehashing this unforgettable character, the sequel is a pleasure to watch that easily matches the original.

Full review
Bridget Jones - The Edge of Reason is a Film that I actually saw at the Cinema when it was first released back in 2004. Having not seen its predecessor, Bridget Jones's Diary but heard many people talk about it I had assumed that it was going to be a typical "Girly" type Film. However since my Friend was desperate to see it and had no one to go with I agreed to go along with her for the company and the promise of a Pint afterwards.

Like its predecessor, which I have since seen, although I managed to watch them back to front, Renee Zellweger plays the character of Bridget Jones, Colin Frith plays her Boyfriend, Mark Darcy and Hugh Grant re-appears as Bridget's ex Boxfriend, Daniel Cleaver.

Bridget Jones is a thirty something year old, slightly, dizzy English Girl with her head so far up in the clouds that she rarely seems to be looking where she is going. To describe Bridget as clumsy would be something of an understatement and disaster and embarrassment never seem to be too far away. The one thing however that keeps Bridget going is the fact that she is so madly in love with Mark Darcy.

Mark Darcy is everything that Bridget is not. He is posh and intelligent with a high profile Job as a Human Rights Lawyer. On the downside however he is shy and has difficulty putting across his emotions and expressing his feelings. To the outside world Bridget Jones and Mark Darcy look like an odd couple, but it seems that there is some truth in the old saying that opposites attract, well at the start of the Film anyway.

The story kicks off where Bridget Jones's Diary ended with the couple still blissfully in love but if things were not about to go horribly wrong then there would not be very much of an entertaining Film ahead of us. Bridget works as a Television Presenter for a rather tacky, low-key Channel that very few people bother to watch but her ex Boyfriend, Daniel Cleaver also works for the same company. Daniel is a little bit of a creepy character and it is never clear where his true intentions lie. We are never certain if he still holds a torch for Bridget or whether he is just intent with spoiling the relationship between her and Mark Darcy.

Twenty minutes into the Film and things between Bridget Jones and Mark Darcy are not going particularly well. There has been a disastrous Dinner Party followed by a Skiing Trip during both of which Bridget has managed to embarrass herself due to a misunderstanding in which she believes that Mark is having an affair with one of his work Colleagues, Rebecca Gillis.

Feeling that she can no longer carry on in a relationship with a Man she no longer trusts she decides to end the relationship. At around this same time she is offered the chance to go to Thailand as a TV Presenter and feeling that this is the ideal way to forget about her troubles off she heads.

Accompanying her on her trip to Thailand is her ex Boyfriend, Daniel Cleaver as well as her best friend, Shazza. Shazza finds herself a young Toy boy in Thailand in the shape of Jed (played by Paul Nicholls) but it seems that he has an ulterior motive and plants her with a Gift stuffed full of Heroin. A last minute twist sees the drugs switched to Bridget's Luggage and she is arrested at the Airport and bustled off to a Thai Prison.

Mark Darcy flies out to help her case but you will need to wait until the end of the Film to find out if she is destined to serve the 20 years in Jail that lie in front of her.

I was actually surprised to find that I enjoyed this Film and there are certainly some very funny moments including one right at the beginning of the Film where Bridget is at Work daydreaming about her Lover. She decides to ring him up to tell him that the Sex that they had last night was the best that she had ever had. Mark tells her that he is in a meeting and that she is being broadcast aloud on loudspeaker....Ooops!

I have heard criticism that this Film is too similar to its predecessor but since I watched it originally without the benefit of seeing the original Film I found it to be fresh and funny. Having now seen both Films I can accept there are a lot of similarities but at the end of the day this is a sequel and so this is probably to be expected.

The main Cast of the Film is as below:

Renée Zellweger - Bridget Jones
Hugh Grant - Daniel Cleaver
Colin Firth - Mark Darcy
Jim Broadbent - Bridget's Dad
Gemma Jones - Bridget's Mum
Jacinda Barrett - Rebecca Gillis
Sally Phillips - Shazzer
Paul Nicholls - Jed
