Bridge to Terabithis is a light-hearted imaginative childrens tale. Director Csupo is a little unknown this is his second directorial movie and is better known for producing the Rugrats and Wild Thornberrys - don't allow the fact that this is a childrens tale put you off viewing this very artistic portrayal of youth and imagination it is still worth watching here are some of the main reasons -
Josh Hutcherson - someone told me last year to watch out for this kid and he sure is making a name for himself... star of "Little Manhattan" (2005 Dir. Mark Levin) and "Zathura" (2005 Dir. Jon Favreau) this young lad shines with an outstanding true to life performance. This kid will have Dakota Fanning turning in her crib... watch out for this one at the awards this year!
Anna Sophia Robb - yep another child actor that stands out. Star of "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" (2005 Dir. Tim Burton) Anna Sophia adds the element of innocence and wonder to a magical and unusual story.
The Story - the film is arguably faithful to the book (Auth. Paterson, K) the story is of 2 bullied children that come together to share an inaginary world "Terabithia" full of mythical creatures they create from the people they know around them. It does have touchs of Narnia to it but it is far less violent and religious and carries a much stronger moral message. Jessie is smitten with his music teacher (played by Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy's - Zooey Daschenel) and finds new found courage from the world of Terabithia. Living with 4 sisters on a farm Jesse is often bullied and humiliated (wearing his sisters hand-me-downs) when new girl Leslie (Rudd) comes to town he finds that she is the only one who doesn't judge him. The stories focus on his relationship with his sister is also very sweet.
There are three reasons and there are more including animation and effects, other strong performances, soundtrack and editing.
This blends "My Girl" (1991 Dir. Howard Zieff) with the Princess Bride (1987 Dir Rob Reiner)
Not going to give away the ending but have a hanky at the ready and you may want to watch it first if you are planning on showing it to your kids.
The film is rated PG and is suitable for most of the family.
This is an easy watch - see it if you enjoyed:
"Little Manhattan" (2005 Dir. Mark Levin) "Chronicals of Narnia - The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe" (2005 Dir. Andrew Adamson)
