Having heard so many good things about the chucky, I thought I would buy chucky, unable to find chucky, I found the bride of chucky.... What a mistake that was...If I took this review as seriously as I did the film...well, there wouldnt be one!
Forgive me for not singing its praises, like so many people seem to do for the chucky series. I'm a big fan of horror, and comedy for that matter. But the only thing that made any reaction, was the laughability of the whole plot, and its entire existence!
Firstly, where do I start... Well, at the beginning I suppose. The point from which it goes downhill.
Were given no information about who the main female character is, and for some reason, shes bothered about this weird doll, which is supposed to be terrifying. Personally, I dont think that the image of the doll would scare a toddler, but Iguess its all about personal opinion.
This doll is supposedly alive after the main character - Tiffany - performs some sort of incantation on it. Anyone wet their pants yet? huh, guess not! So anyway, the doll - chucky - kills her boyfriend because the doll has some executed murderers soul in it, and Tiffany was 'its' girlfriend. The soul was transferred by voodoo magic
after Charles 'chucky' Lee Ray was gunned down by the police. (you dont need to say it, I know what youre thinking!)
And then this doll turns this girlfriend into a doll like himself, so they can be together forever. Awwwwwwwwwwwww how sweet! Only now, shes decided that she doesnt want to be together forever like this. She hates him now. And they set off on a mission, to get their bodies back. However, they enter the lives of a young couple...
Tiffany - Jennifer Tilly Chucky (voice of) - couple: Jesse - Nick Stabile Jade - Katherine Heigl
I like the way two stories are set along side each other on a parallel time scale. The breaks between the two stories stopped me from complete boredom. However a fault with this is that the audience constantly expects one story to exceed the other. A challenge that this film could not uphold.
One major problem with the plot, is that we are given no information about who this main character is (until half way through the plot) By which point the audience has already decided they dont know who this woman/doll thing is, and they dont care either. If you dont care about her, then its hard to see chucky (who ironically has ginger hair like the rugrat - not a good image) as a villain.
With out a villain, its hard to have a real horror, and hence the plot goes down the drain.
Another problem with horror I have is that I personally think they need to be credible plots, none of this living doll rubbish! If a horror is a horror it means its meant to scare you. If its meant to scare you, its because youre meant to be able to imagine it happening to you for real. Its that sense of not knowing if it really will, that should scare you. So lets take a vote...who believes a living doll is actually going to try and kill them?
On top of this...the whole design of the dolls leads me to pressume they were created on a cheap budget. The dolls show lack of imagination, the scariest they can make a doll, is by giving him a few scars? I think not! The size of the dolls is also ridiculous. These dolls are meant to be able to walk around the street, and in peoples houses etc without being noticed, isnt that the whole point of a horror - not knowing anything about your demise until its too late?! Obviously not, since the 2 dolls would both easily reach knee height (to say knee height of a giant might be a small stretch of the imagination).
I also found it very hard to define the genre of this film. I know it is supposed to be a horror (and I use the genre loosely) but Im never quite sure if this could be considered a romantic horror. This is a running theme of love throughout the film. Both sprouting from the decaying doll of chucky, and the couple whose lives they enter.
As if this wasnt enough... we're not told how he was able to turn her into a doll, as well as other smaller details. Since when were dolls magical? This film just constantly misses the mark. There are too many details that are not given, or given too late. However, I doubt that the details would have persuaded me to like this film even if they had been included.
A big problem with this and other such films is that it is almost impossible to relate to any of the characters. Maybe a proportion of the audience would have been able to relate to Tilly's character before she was turned into a doll, but this is a small window of opportunity.
The rating of the film is 18, although I really dont think that this is scary enough to merit such a rating. I would recommend this film to those of ages 14/15+
The film lasts an excrutiating 89 minutes, and is only available in English, with no subtitles.
Producer - David Kirschner / Grace Gilroy Director - Ronny Yu Writer - Don Mancini
Special features include: Uk trailor , photo library, history of chucky, production notes, cast and crew biographies and filmographies, location diaries and feature length commentaries with Ronny Yu and Don mancini.
I dont really think that this is worth what you might pay in some stores, although I bought my copy from music zone for a little over £2 probably just aswell. I might watch this movie again if I got really bored, but dont hold your breath

Nice review, this has to be the biggest load of rubbish for a film yet.

The original was slightly scary, by this point it had been watered down to idiots. I do think this one was supposed to be tongue in cheek, but its no better for it. And if you think things couldn't get any worse, check out Seed Of Chucky. Good review.

Dolls are damn scary. Clowns are worse, though. Money could not pay me to sit through this film. xx
