For those of you out there who know nothing about Chucky, I will fill you in. In 1988 Chucky first appeared in ' Child's Play' a film about a criminal called Charles Lee Ray, who after gunned by the police and now dying uses voodoo magic to transfer his soul into a doll. A little boy called Andy ends up owning him, and soon discovers that ' Chucky' as he's now called is no ordinary doll! Chucky starts talking to Andy and makes him his target, so that he can transfer his soul into the boy and live once more!!!!! 1991 brought us ' Child's play 2'. After the events from the first film, Andy is now in a foster home having escaped Chucky, but Chucky comes after him. Then in 1991 the 3rd film in the series comes out and Chucky is more determined than ever to seek out Andy and become human again. Ten years later and Chucky is back!
Plot
Psycho killer Charles "Chucky" lee Ray (Brad Dourif) was gunned down ten years ago by the police.
One stormy night Chucky's estranged ex-girlfriend Tiffany (Jennifer Tilly) rescues his remains and uses a voodoo spell to bring him back to life! Tiffany is electrocuted by chucky, and also ends up trapped inside a doll! Now they must work together if they're ever to become human again. They need to find Chucky's body as well as a suitable on for Tiffany. Enter 'Jade' (Katherine Heigl) and 'Jesse' (Nick Stabile) a couple of newly weds on the run who the 2 dolls meet on the way of their
quest.
My Opinion
Please note, I found this film funny, gruesome in places, but not scary! There was very foul language throughout the film, but then again the film would've been lost without it as Chucky has a very foul and dirty mind. When I first saw the film advertised in a magazine and the reviewer mentioned puppets, I just had to laugh, I mean a horror film with puppets in my mind was hardly going to be edge of your seat material. Huge congratulations must go to the puppets creators as they really did an amazing job on making them seem very real to life! The puppets facial expressions were uncannily like a human in my eyes. I would defiantly say that this film was full of dark humour and the scene that stands out in my mind was the 'sex scene' between the two dolls.
Quote
Tiffany " Have you got a rubber"? Chucky " Have I got a rubber? Tiff look at me, I'm all rubber"!
Jennifer Tilly was superb as ' Tiffany' and really brought a lot of character to the role! I really felt sorry for her when she too became a doll! Her voice is somewhat grating but I think that was to do with how Tilly and the Director saw Tiffany's character, as Tiffany is portrayed as a typical Barbie doll. Brad Dourif was well chosen as the voice of ' Chucky', I always think that adding your voice to a character rather then acting in person is far harder, but Dourif rose to the challenge well. He gave Chucky such an evil and dirty voice, but added a huge slice of humour to the doll that really came through. Nick Stabile and Katherine Heigl shone in this film as a couple of newlyweds who become unwitting accomplices, and start to suspect each other of the killings. I think that acting alongside puppets is a very hard task to pull off, as you haven't got that human interaction and response. The way they both communicated with them made the puppets seem very much alive. All of the murder scenes were over the top gross out humour, but without being shocking. For those of you already familiar with our star you will know that Chucky doesn't kill anybody by halves anyway. The character loves the thrill of thinking up new and invented ways of killing someone and loves the fact that he can share this with his bride in this film. This brings me on nicely to my thoughts on the execution of the death scenes. As I've already mentioned the plot isn't exactly mind blowing, and what I did find hard to swallow was the fact that both the dolls were somehow capable of overpowering human beings! Now I'm sorry but if a doll was on top of me with a knife I would just strangle the little critter. The film for me was more to do with it providing overly gruesome murders and the dark humour involved which for me the film accomplished. The Heavy Metal soundtrack that accompanies the film added to the dark humour without being too over powering. Please note that you don't need to see the previous films in order to view this one, they just give you some background information on Chucky!
Special Features
This DVD has quite a selection of special features on it, these include:- The UK trailer (Nothing really to say on this one). Spotlight on location where we're taking behind the scenes of the making of Chucky. We get to hear the thoughts on the film by the Director, producer and actors as well as behind the scenes footage. I found this to be really interesting as we get to see how much work goes into designing the puppets and the fact that at any one time up to 9 people are needed to move each of the puppets! Jennifer Tilly's Diary is basically an open diary where you get to flick through the pages and find at how she got the part, her thoughts on it and how the filming was going. This was a nice added insight which I have never come across on a DVD before. I Had to feel sorry for her as she mentions that in one scene a Tarantula has to crawl over her, and she was expected the spider to be added into the scene with computer graphics! Production notes includes 11 pages of how Chucky came about, his popularity and the idea of introducing a bride for Chucky. This was a nice valuable extra in my mind as it provided some very interesting background info on the characters. Chucky's TV spot, is basically 4 slightly different trailers that were produced for the TV. I thought they were a waste of time as they barely lasted 10 secs each and were hardly different from the last! Chucky and Tiffany do London was a spoof documentary following ' Wayne Ringburn' (Not his real name) as he goes on a hunt to find the two dolls that have been picking off London's residents one by one. Whoever thought of this extra ought to have been shot! I know this sounds harsh but it was unnecessary, very tacky and didn't help me get to know the characters any better. A photo library was the last of the features and included approximately 60 pictures of the characters and behind the scene footage. Some of the pictures were doubled up on and in my mind wasn't a feature that needed to be included.
Summary
On the whole this is a very good value DVD to buy, with a hilarious plot, strong performances by the cast and well produced special effects. If you're into dark humour then I would highly recommend this film. Fans of the previous Child's Play films will find this a huge improvement on them.
