Bollywood bonanza. This film reminded me so much of the wonderful musicals we used to see, West Side Story, My Fair Lady and the like. My husbands face when they started singing in the street was a picture! Half way into the film the fire alarms went off in the Cinema and I found myself, with hubby and his youngest daughter (12) outside on the pavement discussing whether we should go back in, or leave. What’s to discuss? Louise and I just had to go back, we were embroiled in this love story and wanted to know how it ended. Decision made and hubby reluctantly made his way back to his seat.
I offer a totally unbiased review of the film as I was totally unaware at the time that this was an adaptation of Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice”. Not that this fact would have made a difference, I have never read Pride and Prejudice and so judge this film on its merit and not against something which has gone before.
What drew me to see it was my knowledge of the Indian culture, my love of their commitment to family life and the dazzling colour.
This is East meets West, and the underlying theme of the film for me was the Indian culture of arranged marriages, and the knowledge that it is dishonourable for an Indian girl to marry an ‘outsider’. It is the love story of Lalita (Aishwarya Rai) and the American William Darcy (Martin Henderson).
Lalita reminds me of a very close friend of mine, aware of the Western world, extremely intelligent and beautiful but bound by her traditions and her love of India. William Darcy on the other hand has money, is intelligent but finds himself struggling to understand Lalita’s culture finding it archaic and unpalatable.
Do they fulfil their love, you will have to wait and see, I will not spoil it for you, but be warned, you will not know until the very end of the film. Was it a happy or sad ending? Well it brought tears to my eyes and that should be enough to get most of you to go and see it.
The film itself was good. I would not say it was exceptional. Some of the acting was a little wooden and lip sync in the singing scenes was not great. However, the energy of the film makes up for all of this, the dance scenes are wonderful, and realistic, the music had me tapping my feet away and the vibrancy of the colour absolutely amazing. Humour is added with the introduction of the overbearing mother, who is trying desperately to find good matches for her 4 daughters and also by Kholi (Nitin Ganatra), a total geek but wealthy and a potential match for Lalita. Watch out for the Cobra dance, and remember to listen to the lyrics of the songs, they help tell the story.
Location shots are well thought out with scenes shot in Amritsar (showing the Golden Temple, Goa, London (the London Eye), and Los Angelos with fantastic aerial shots of the Grand Canyon.
Would I go and see it again, definitely. Would hubby come, probably not.
Rating 12A – As a parent I rate this film a perfectly good watch for children with no sexual scenes and little, if any bad language.

Advantages: The photography is superb (includes the Golden Temple, the London Eye, the Grand Canyon); the casting was wonderful; it is an extravaganza of colour & culture in English! Disadvantages: If you dislike "Bollywood" musicals and dancing, Morris dancing or Romance you might not like this.
Advantages: Occasionaly brings a smile to the face with the odd funny remark. Disadvantages: A real let down, espescially considering the previous film (Bend it Like Beckham)
