There should be fanfares. Every contributor to pop's legacy should respectfully bow down ... more
in silent thanks that Smile has finally been officially released. It may not be the original album (the tragic deaths of Carl and Dennis Wilson, and perpetual legal wrangles ensure The Beach Boys remain steadfastly estranged from this re-recording, and each other), but that won't matter to fans who devoured bootlegs, worshipped the recycled Smile songs that appeared on later albums and obsessed over literature such as "Look! Listen! Smile! Vibrate!" or Andrew Doe and John Tobler's Definitive Beach Boys guide. Imagine waiting 37 years for a train to the best theme park in the world. Finally, there you are, and despite the paint job, it still doesn't fail to delight. Well, that's what it is to listen to Smile. The ideas may seem far-out initially, but they soon reveal themselves as pop-art at its absolute zenith. Who can argue with the sublime "Cabinessence"? The majesty of "Surf's Up"? And (least of all) the jewel in the crown of pop music "Good Vibrations"? Modern music may have caught up, but Smile's joyous trundle through Americana will leave mouths open wide in wonder. The gripes over the absence of Beach Boy vocals, (particularly Carl Wilson and Mike Love) may be valid, but Wilson's band are respectful imitators, and this is the best Brian's sounded in years--his world-weary, poignant voice conveys Van Dyke Parks' impressionistic lyrics more maturely than his younger self. It's impossible to give a definitive opinion, because it's something that everyone needs to hear, history or no history, and though it may not quite satisfy 37 years worth of anticipation, or stand up to the original version (this version shows Brian was so, so close to originally finishing it), it's unquestionably the album of the decade. --Thom Allott

Advantages: Finally hear the "lost masterpiece" Disadvantages: Brian's voice is not what it used to be
First of all it should be made clear that this is of course not the "actual" 1960s lost album but a brand new recording.
That version of "Smile" was to be released as a follow up to Pet Sounds and its revolutionary song structures, surreal lyrics and sheer elegance was the album that would cement The Beach Boys as greater than even The Beatles. BrianWilson, meanwhile, was to be enshrined as rock's true genius. Of course it was never completed and Brian's drug-addled mind fractured. The project was abandoned and The Beach Boys would now hit a steady decline after the creative peak of Pet Sounds.
For many years fans have been clamouring for material from the 60's sessions and versions of Smile have turned up on many bootlegs of varying quality. At last then we have a final version by the great man himself minus those Beach Boys ...
Advantages: Brian's back! Backing band is exceptional Disadvantages: Brian's voice is a little weak
and warmth. At times he does sound utterly terrified and breaks into curious jokes throughout but this adds to his oddball charm.
The backing band is magnificent - just listen to 'Let's Go Away For A While' and you will hear a note for note, tone for tone live version of the album track performed perfectly.
Yes, this is for Beach Boys and BrianWilson enthusiasts. If you are not one then stay away, you will only criticise how the years have mistreated him and ruin the enjoyment for the rest of us. ...
Advantages: Great Acting, excellent story Disadvantages: Some sad scenes of the Afghan suffering
discover they were not when they picked them up. I thought the adults who were spoken to managed to put their suffering across in a very poignant way and at times I did feel extremely sorry for them.
The scenes which show the Afghan people fighting against the Russians were filmed and shot with great detail and they were all believable and did not look altered or computer animated in any way.
The DVD which we have does have some bonus material which includes:-
The Making of Charlie Wilson's War - An inside look at the making of the film featuring interviews with Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts.
