SHINE, an Australian film drama was released in early 1997, and later that year its main actor, Geoffrey Rush, picked up both Oscar, Golden Globe and BAFTA awards for Best Actor. Its Australian director, Scott Hicks was nominated for an Oscar as Best Director, and received the prestigious David Lean Award For Direction at the BAFTAs. So pretty impressive credentials. But did SHINElive up to the hype?
To begin with on a superficial level, SHINE, is unfairly perceived to fall into the 'classical arts film'' category, as the story basically concerns itself with a young, gifted Australian classical pianist, David Helfgott, The fact that classical music features abundantly in this film may unfortunately put off many younger viewers who prefer to watch films featuring pop culture, when it comes to music. Advantages: Stylish with a good cast. Disadvantages: Does not make sense.
performance and she is even better in this than demonstrated in X-Men.
Both of the above actors deserve to be in clever films than this.
DVD Quality:

Sound Bites - This is quite a refreshingly different extra to be included on a DVD. It is extremely light-hearted and some ...

Advantages: The cinematography, the storyline, the acting, the direction... Disadvantages: Not a single one in my opinion
are perfect for the film though - not many people would have ended up in her situation and there has to be some explanation for why she stays with her husband and does what he tells her. Overall, I love her in this role, but can understand that she is a bit of an acquired taste.
I think Danny Lloyd is great as Danny. Danny has a gift called 'shining', which enables him to see the past or future, although not at will. He can also have telepathic conversations with other people who have the gift, and has an imaginary friend who lives in his mouth and, at times of great trauma, takes over Danny's body. This is not an easy role for anyone to take on, and for a child of Danny's age - he was just 6 at the time the film was made - it is quite an extraordinary performance. According to imdb.com, Kubrick was very protective of Danny because ...
