When you think of Henry Mancini, you inevitably think of either "Peter Gunn" or "Moon ... more
River." (Well, maybe "The Pink Panther"--but that became a cartoon show, so it doesn't count!) Breakfast at Tiffany's gave the world the latter tune, and that beautiful melody recurs throughout this soundtrack LP, which remained No. 1 on the Billboard pop charts for 12 weeks in 1961. (Music for Peter Gunn in 1959 was Mancini's only other No. 1 album.) The soundtrack doesn't include Andy Williams's hit single of "Moon River," but then neither did the film. It does, however, take you through the many moods of the film (and the exploits of Miss Holly Golightly), with an emphasis on Latin influences in the forms of "Latin Golightly" and "Moon River Cha Cha." Nevertheless, one common complaint has been that RCA could've remastered the music and added additional tracks to flesh out the CD. Maybe in the future... --Bill Holdship

Golightly is top notch in style and a sensation wherever she goes. Her brownstone apartment vibrates with martini-soaked parties as she plays hostess to millionaires and gangsters alike. Yet Holly never loses sight of her ultimate goal - to find a real life place like Tiffany's that makes her feel at home. Immortalized in a film starring Audrey Hepburn Truman Capote's "Breakfast at Tiffany's" is full of sharp wit and in its exuberant cast of characters vividly captures the restless slightly madcap era of early 1940s New York.

Hepburn in the role of Holly Golightly. The free-spirited gamine darts about New York, feted by wealthy men drawn to her megawatt charm and elegance, hoping that the party will never end. After shopping in front of Tiffany's window, she meets aspiring writer Paul Varjak (George Peppard), and they begin a platonic friendship. Sponsored by an older woman (Patricia Neal) whose interest in the young man is more than literary, he can identify with her experience better than most, taking it upon himself to protect her from the worst aspects of city life. But she seems to need little protection from such friends as incarcerated mob boss Sally Tomato (Alan Reed), who pays her to carry messages to Sing Sing. With her infectious joi de vivre, she helps Paul break through a paralysing case of writer's block. But when the genial Doc Golightly (Buddy Ebsen) appears in New York in search of Holly, the sources of her gossamer lifestyle suddenly become clearer. Edwards's lighter-than-air romantic comedy, set in a fantasy New York, rides on the irresistible charm of Hepburn at her peak, as well as a memorable score by Henry Mancini. Although George Axelrod's screenplay is as different from the original story as George Peppard is from the young Capote, the film succeeds on its own terms.

I’m afraid that I’ve not read the book so I can’t comment on how faithful the film adheres to the original storyline. All I know is that for years and years after first seeing this film - I wanted to be Audrey Hepburn. And who could blame me - in this film she is georgeous.
Essentially the plot is simple – Audrey Hepburn plays Holly Golightly, a high-priced escort with dreams of marrying an older, rich man. She isn't wealthy but she likes to pretend to be. She parties with high society folk and window shops at "Tiffany's." However she starts falling in love with a young writer, Paul Varjak ("Fred"), played by George Peppard, who moves into her apartment building, being a gigolo, kept by an older woman (Patricia Neal). Both their lives become more complicated, as a result of their relationship. Although essentially a comedy, there are dramatic overtones throughout the movie. Moments of sadness work intermingle with the moments of hopeful optimism to make this film uplifting and unforgettable. In essence it’s a beautifully romantic tale.
Audrey Hepburn, plays the role of Holly amazingly well and totally absorbs herself into the character and thanks to Hepburn’s skill,. Holly’s character develops before us with amazing clarity. Holly is first portrayed as fun and wacky but turns truly poignant when we discover her true background.
Audrey Hepburn and George Peppard work well together and if you see this film you will understand what is meant by a couple having “screen chemistry”. Ok, they are no quiet Bogart and Bacall but they still make a fine job of portraying playing a couple, who are two of a kind, falling in love despite the difficult situations that surround them. Basically, together they are just down-right cute.
Another great thing about this film is the music. The film's score, and theme song, "Moon River," both won Oscars and set the perfect tone for this movie.
All in all, it’s a light, romantic comedy with a real feel-good factor. Perfect for night in on the sofa.
Advantages: Audrey Hepburn; the supporting cast; the score Disadvantages: The character of Mr Yunioshi
Breakfast At Tiffany's is my fabourite film. I say favourite, rather than best, because it is one of those films I just love, and so I can't be completely objective about it! I will get the flaws out of the way first so I can get with the gushing. The film is taken from the novella of the same name by Truman Capote, and is very much more soft-centred than the original material. Some viewers have been critical of the way the book was adapted, particularly ... ...personally find it more rewarding to see the two pieces as completely separate, and I feel the ending is appropriate to the spirit of the film.
It is much more straightforward to state that the characterization of Mr Yunioshi (Mickey Rooney) descends to unpleasant, dated stereotyping and isn't even funny. Fortunately 'Breakfast at Tiffany's' as a whole transcends Rooney's performance.
The plot is involving and surprisingly gritty for a glamour ...

Advantages: Watch this film to restore your faith in love and life Disadvantages: Can be expensive in rental fees and tissues
Everytime something bad happens (particularly regarding relationships) and I am feeling low, I put on this film to give me faith in life and love!
It is one of those time-less, classic, feel good movies that everyone must see - I think a lot of people are put off by how fashionable Audrey Hepburn has become recently... but I think that she deserves all the praise she gets!
At first I rented this film - then after the 5th rental I realised that ... ...You can usually buy this film for around £7 - as it is often in the sales section!
WARNING: have tissues handy!
STORY
This film is set in New York, 1961. It tells the story of a young woman, who was married too early, trying to escape her life by re-inventing herself. She, Holly, has run-away from her married life (with an old husband and 5 kids) to be young / free and single again. She lives a wild life, drinking, partying and escorting rich ...

Advantages: the fashions Disadvantages: the comedy
read the novella a couple of years back and have had the DVD sitting in my 'to watch' pile for around 6 months purely because I couldn't believe it would be as good as everyone claims it to be. I find Audrey to be incredibly attractive, watched my fair lady only last week, but I was right in my assumption that I wouldn't enjoy this as much as I should.
The version I watched was very grainy, since it's the first time I have watched it I don't know if this means I have an inferior DVD or they are all like that. Moon River certainly sounded fine although Hepburn's attempts at miming playing guitar were pitiful.
Apparently Peppard employed the method school of acting for this film which annoyed Hepburn no end. Now in my mind, method acting is when you wear a blindfold for a month so you can relate to blind people or go underground ...

EXTRAS
The DVD version I own of Sabrina is part of the five film boxset (see below for details). The extras are a photo gallery and a documentary. The photos are worth seeing and are a selection of the cast, both publicity stills and behind-the-scenes shots.
The documentary has a very annoying voiceover, but otherwise it is interesting and I enjoyed watching it. I was especially fascinated to see the vintage footage of Audrey Hepburn at an awards ceremony, and talking about her role in the play Ondine with her future husband Mel Ferrer. There is also some footage of Humphrey Bogart with Lauren Bacall.
PRICE
Sabrina is available as a single DVD for £5.97 from Amazon. It is also part of the Audrey Hepburn Collection Box Set. This contains five films on DVD (Breakfast at Tiffany's, Sabrina, Funny Face, Paris When it ...
While the bottom two are self-explanatory, the documentary might need some explanation. It lasts about eight minutes and while it is quite interesting to see clips from the films and understand the chronology of them, overall, I found the documentary disappointing.
Why? Well, it is basically a long advert for Paramount Pictures and they only highlight their own films. The voiceover is supremely annoying too and I was quite relieved when it was over. Worth watching once only.
PRICES
I bought the box set from Ebay a few months ago, but you can get the single DVD of Funny Face from Amazon for £5.99 brand new. If you'd prefer the box set, it's £34.99 on Amazon and features five movies on DVD.
