Introduction to Break-In
After certain industries such as music, media and television began to realise that there was some serious money to be made from hip-hop music, film studios decided to get in on a piece of the action to, leading to films such as Krush Groove, Beat Street, Wild style and the Break-in movies 1 and 2 to name a few. Using a more Disney style flair to the film as in more cutesy helped to give the film a universal appeal and a sound family film, but still maintained some of the important aspects of the breakdance scene. Break-In was released in 1984 and is a re-telling of West Side Story which was a 1957 musical.

The Story
The film tells the story of two breakdancers called Ozone and Turbo who's life's become intertwined with that of Kelly a contemporary dancer. Kelly is a typical American girl from a wealthy family and Ozone and Turbo are poor live in the ghetto but their lives are enriched by the dancing that they do. Turbo and Ozone have competition in the form of a duo called Electro Rock who are determined to compete in a breakdance battle against the guys and when it finally happens Electro Rock have a secret weapon. After some convincing Kelly convinces the guys to teach her and allow her to become part of the routine. The trouble is that Kelly is ambitious and gets offered a part in a very successful stage show. Torn between her commitments to the guys facing a second showdown and wanting to be successful in her dancing Kelly must make a huge decision that could either see her becoming a star in broadway or a star in the ghetto.
What I Thought of the Film
Without a doubt the film as a large dollop of cheese but it really doesn't matter since this feel good movie has so much genuine magic. The music holds appeal by incorporating hip-hop, electro, 80's pop and dance throughout the film to hold the attention of those that watch it for the hip-hop aspects but also mum's, dad's and everyone else. The film has a storyline to help people relate to the culture, music and dance as well as give the dancing direction. The storyline also has a love story to it as prior mentioned about the Westside Story but also has a lot of humour in it also. One of the feel good factors is seeing the underdogs achieve as well as overcome social/class distinction. The quality of the dancing is truly incredible and the music is great. There are also appearances by Ice-T and well as a bit role by Jean Claude Van-Damme.
There is one scene where Turbo dancing outside the shop at night with a broom to Tour De France by Kraftwerk and the scene is absolutely awesome.
Advantages: Non violent, no bad language, suitable for kids. Disadvantages: The ending is a bit of an anti-climax
I remember watching this film over and over when it first came out in the 80's when body popping and breaking was at its biggest. Recently I just had an urge to rekindle some of childhood memories and purchasing this film on dvd did exactly that.
The storyline follows that of an aspiring young dancer named Kelly who gets introduced to the breakdancing scene. After spurning the unwanted advances of her traditional dance teacher, Kelly realizes that ... ...up with Turbo and Ozone, two of the hottest street dancers and is given the street name of 'Special K'.
Together the three of them learn moves and styles that send the rest of the street dancers crashing.
Striving to give street dancing the credibility that it deserves, they enter a big dance competition, but almost don't make the entry! One of the main rivals in the competition is Special K's old dance teacher, and still bitter from his rejection, ...
