Before I tell you about one of my favourite films I must first give you all the technical stuff about the DVD.
It is a single sided DVD published by Paramount Pictures, directed by and starring Mel Gibson. Running time is approximately 180 minutes. My copy is in widescreen and I purchased it from Blackstar for £21.59. We opted for the Special edition that contains two discs.
The special features include Anamorphic Widescreen, Aspect Ratio: 2.35:1, Disc One: Feature Film; Exclusive behind the scenes commentary by Mel Gibson, Interactive menus, International Trailer, and Disc Two: Mel Gibson's Braveheart - A Filmmaker's Passion documentary. There are also subtitles in a variety of languages and for English Hard of Hearing.
The actors include: Mel Gibson(William Wallace) Sophie Marceau (Princess Isabelle) Brendan Gleeson(Hamish) Catherine McCormack(Murron) David O'Hara (Stephen) Angus McFadyen (Robert the Bruce) Patrick McGoohan (King Edward I) Peter Hanly (Prince Edward) James Cosmo (Campbell)
For those of you that don't know the story here is a basic plot outline. I won't go into too much detail for fear of giving too much away.
Braveheart is the Epic tale of William Wallace (played by Mel Gibson) and the rebellion against the English and King Edward Longshanks in 13th century Scotland. Wallace leads the Scottish into battle, hoping to gain revenge for the deaths of his wife and family. There are many battles, lots of blood and the story is a brutal and sad one.
It's not just a gory film, however, it is also a beautiful love story and a tale with a tragic end. The soundtrack is beautiful, as is the scenery. All the film is wonderfully shot and Mel Gibson has directed a film of trully epic proportions. I really enjoyed this film and thought that it translated well in to DVD format. The Documentary was informative and I really felt that I could identify with Wallace's ( and the Scottish peoples') struggle to overcome tyrany.
I was particularly moved by Wallace's reaction to the death of his bride and to the quiet dignity of one of the young ladies when she is about to be "taken" by the English lord to exercise is "noble" rights.
Many of the film may not be historically accurate, but it is a breathtaking piece of cinema, that has been made into a DVD worth buying. It is a film that I could watch again and again and not get bored of it. Mind you, i will probably always cry at the end!
