With a story based about as far away from the truth as is physically possible, this vehicle for the ham that is Mel Gibson is unbelievably predictable. As usual Hollywood's perception of historical events as black-and-white dominates this film, the English are portrayed as dastardly scoundrels and the Scots as brave saints who want for nothing but their "Freeeeedoommm". This film is not only incredibly patronising to its audience but also a very real piece of propaganda. Hollywood seems to take no responsibility for educating their audience, they ignore the fact that most of the audience are not medieval history scholars and therefore once they see the old tag-line "based on a true story" a large proportion will take the story as gospel. Apart from a few good performances and a passable battle sequence this film is dross without taking into account the historical context.
