I wasn't 'brassed off' watching this film!
Review of Brassed Off DVD by kingfisher111

Advantages: very moving
Disadvantages: none

Brassed Off was shown the other evening on More 4 and as there was not much else on I thought I would give it a go and I was so glad I did. It is a beautiful emotional film which will call on a whole range of emotions as you watch it! I felt that it was two hours watching which was time very well spent. 'Brassed Off' is a film set in the early 1990s at a time when there was a lot of political unrest and Margaret Thatcher, the then prime minister, ...
...reason for this was the relentless push to close the coal pits, putting countless miners out of work with very few prospects of finding new employment. The film is set at Grimley Pit where the miners are facing the same threats of closure. Also, as was a very strong tradition, many of the miners were also members of the pit's brass band. The film tends to take two parallel strands - the closure of the pit against the activity of the band who are ... Read review

Fantastic
Review of Brassed Off DVD by  AdonisC

Advantages: watch
Disadvantages: none

...These days, it is gripping films such as these that do it for me. I found that this film, was, quite simply, fantastic and would strongly advise anyone to watch it, featuring a heart-warming tender story of a brass band from middle england making their mark on a world which was 'bigger' than them. Some of the performances are, and I am no film critic but (!), oscar level, but sadly the americans did not see it that way. If one also gets into the film, the strong undertones soon become apparent. A recommened view !... Read review

Brass Band Banter
Review of Brassed Off DVD by  FarQRecords

Advantages:
Disadvantages:

...A film about a brass band. Sound’s awful doesn’t it. But it’s actually a damn good, British made movie. It centres around a Yorkshire town where they rely of the mining pit to employ the majority of the town. The main release is the brass band run by Danny (played by Pete Postlethwaite) who are entering the national brass band championships. When Danny has a heart attack the band rally round to try and win it for him, lead by Stephen Tompkinson, Ewan MacGregor and Tara Fitzgerald. This is yet another great British film that should have been massive. It’s superb and the best thing is, you normally find it as cheap as £1.99 or £2.99 in Woolworths or Tesco in recent weeks. Well worth a purchase.... Read review

Great Movie
Review of Brassed Off DVD by  Suchet

Advantages: Great Drama
Disadvantages: None!

...I don't normaly watch British movies but this one was brilliant - Pete Pothlewait is a great actor - The movie is a basic father/son storyline which is gripping from start to finish - Set in a mining town, the story is about a brass band who are aiming to win a musical competition held in London. The movie also features Ewan Mcgreggor in a very good supporting role, and the rather beautiful Tara Fitzgerald. Direction is such that tragedy and comedy are nicely balanced and every character has been written in with care. And even though the setting is a small town in the north of England somewhere the filmmaker has managed to portray a certain beauty and charm to it. Like 'East is East' this is up there in the top league with the best British movies.... Read review
