I finally got round to watching this film on DVD. As most other people, I had high expectations of the film. Steve Martin and Eddie Murphy have both released comedy classics in the past, so this should have been brilliant. Not so I'm afraid.
Steve Martin plays a director trying to film a movie even through the main star doesn't know he's in it. They manage this by getting the other members of the cast to walk up to Eddie Murphys character and recite their lines / do the scene regardless.
Its not that the film is entirely unfunny, Eddie Murphy is the saving grace, he had me in stitches a couple of times, Steve Martin just didn't hit the mark for me. I even found some of Murphys humour uncomfortable (ie laughing at a black man whose aspiration in life is to run errands, not exactly PC )
I also found the DVD extras as uninspiring and bland as the film, just the usual outtakes and deleted scenes
Its not a bad comedy, its just not a good comedy, go for, See No Evil, Hear No Evil with Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder to see how it should be done.
