Advantages: Great acting, direction and music Disadvantages: Drags a bit towards the end
...masterpiece some claim it is, Boogie Nights is nevertheless a very impressive movie, especially considering it was only Paul Thomas Anderson's second feature-length film. Although it could be argued that Anderson is just being flamboyant with this stunning opening shot, the flip side is that he's simply introducing a large cast of characters as quickly as possible. Weaving its way through a vibrant 70's nightclub, the camera introduces us to Jack ... ...At first glance, Boogie Nights seems entirely different to Anderson's first feature film, Sydney. While his debut essentially focussed on two principal characters, this movie presents us with seven or eight in just the opening scene. Both films, however, are led by strong individuals, and this is clearly Anderson's strength as a writer/director - the attention he gives to his characters. Additionally, he appears to have a gift for drawing out great ...

Advantages: decent extras and great film Disadvantages: no trailer
Boogie Nights is the second feature film from Paul Thomas Anderson who is fast emerging as one of the original talents on Hollywood who actually makes films with a bit of substance and manages to pull together excellent ensemble casts. The film is set in the 70's and Californias adule entertainment industry. A renowed director Jack Horner (Burt reynolds) is on the look out for the next big star and he finds that in a young man who takes on the name ... ...presented in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen. Boogie Nights is a very colurful film and New Lines reputation as being at the forefront of dvd is justified by this transfer. It's solid in every aspect with only a few signs of belemish and slight edge enhancement. Overall though you can't fault it. Same goes with the sound. The Dolby Digital 5.1 mix maintains a solid dialougue channel to suit the film's main drive but whenever musical sequence kick in ...

Advantages: A brilliantly made, wonderfully acted epic Disadvantages: Not for those with short attention spans
...is really the case then Boogie Nights was head-and-shoulders above the rest of the competition in 1997, and heralded the arrival of a major new directing talent: Paul Thomas Anderson, the so-called "new Martin Scorsese". Aside from the fact that he handles a camera with consummate skill, it's refreshing to see someone who's not shy about declaring his love for '70's porn. Anderson had already made one film, Hard Eight, before Boogie Nights, but it ... ...multi-narratives, which he went on to develop further in Magnolia. Even if you didn't care for that film, I would urge you to check out this one, as it's probably the better (not to mention shorter) of the two. Despite the fact that it repeatedly threatens to fall apart, it never does and therein lies the charm.
The basic plot concerns young buck Dirk Diggler's initiation into the porn world, aided by his thirteen-inch member, and his subsequent ...

Advantages: Mesmerising trawl through the world of Hardcore porn. A handful of brilliant performances. Disadvantages: Meanders a little towards the end.
'Boogie Nights' is a movie that grabbed a lot of attention on first release, but nobody has said much about since. The rise-and-fall tale of a young man with a very big dick, Anderson's epic trawl through the seedy world of hardcore porn wonderfully evokes the Seventies, and provides a showcase for a brilliant ensemble cast. (Mark Whalberg, Julianne Moore, William H.Macy, John C.Reilly, Don Cheadle, Heather Grahame, Burt Reynolds...that's an impressive ... ...kid who will soon be 'Dirk Diggler', working as busboy in a club until he is spotted by hardcore porn director Jack Horner (played with panache by formerly washed-up Burt Reynolds.) Despatching heavenly 'Rollergirl' (Heather Grahame) to discover just what goodies Eddie has tucked in his shorts, Horner realises he has discovered a star in the making...

DVD Description
It's Los Angeles, 1977, and adult film director Jack Horner (Burt Reynolds) meets Eddie Adams (Mark Wahlberg), a well-endowed dishwasher in a nightclub. Jack recruits Eddie to be his newest star and Eddie, hungry for fame, quickly agrees, changing his name to Dirk Diggler. Soon Dirk is the hottest star in the porn industry, alongside Rollergirl (Heather Graham), a high school dropout who never removes her roller skates, and Amber Waves (Julianne Moore), the veteran star who pines for the son she's not allowed to visit. On the fringes, Little Bill (William H. Macy) fumes while his wife cheats on him in public, and Buck Swope (Don Cheadle) tries to escape the stigma of being a porn actor. The good times roll, but before long Dirk falls victim to the pressures of stardom and a drug habit that ruins his career while Jack struggles with porn's conversion from film to cheaper videotapes. Director Paul Thomas Anderson's breakthrough film is an exhilarating ride along the underbelly of the 1970s inspired by the films of Altman and Scorsese, featuring colorful camera work, a dynamic soundtrack, and excellent performances from the entire cast, most notably Reynolds in an Oscar-nominated comeback role.
