movie about friendship, perseverance, and the power of believing in oneself. Everyone knows that superheroes on television are not real, but TV star super dog Bolt (John Travolta) is a canine star who was carefully raised to believe that he really possesses superpowers. In true loyal canine style, Bolt is completely devoted to his human co-star Penny (Miley Cyrus). When Penny is captured by the evil Dr. Calico (Malcolm McDowell) in their latest television episode and Bolt gets accidentally let loose in the real world, he sets off on a journey to save her. Bolt is confounded when his super powers are suddenly ineffective, but inspiration strikes and Bolt quickly discovers the mysterious, power-stealing effects of Styrofoam packing peanuts. An encounter with alley cat Mittens (Susie Essman) gives Bolt some eye-opening lessons about being a real dog in the real world, while star-struck, ball-enclosed hamster Rhino (Mark Walton) revels in the opportunity to serve as Bolt's sidekick in the quest to rescue Penny. The trio traverses the United States from waffle house to waffle house on a hysterical quest to find Penny and prove that the relationship between Penny and Bolt is real. In the end, Bolt, Mittens, and Rhino learn that everyone is special in their own way and they discover the true power of believing in oneself and one's friends. Selected cinemas showed Bolt in 3-D, but the film is probably equally enjoyable in the traditional format. A fun film with a nice message and a huge dose of cute, Bolt is good entertainment for the entire family. --Tami Horiuchi

This version was only a couple of quid more than the normal DVD and I purchased mine from TheHut (which I have reviewed very recently) and this includes the Blu-ray disc with special features, the film on DVD as well which is worth over £10 and a Rhino soft toy! (the excellent and very funny hamster in the movie) So I obviously decided to buy the Blu-ray!
***Plot***
Bolt and his owner Penny are the stars of a massive TV show with Bolt being the main character. To make everything appear more realistic Bolt must not know that this is just a show and not real and so he believes everything around him is real. When Penny is captured by the evil green eyed man he escapes over night to try and save her. He meets some other animals along the way including the hilarious Rhino, Mittens the cat and some pigeons! While trying to rescue his owner Penny he discovers he is not as super as he thought he was and his super powers are useless in the real world which causes him to be confused and upset.
***Opinion***
The film is really good and enjoyable to watch as a family. Bolt (who is voiced by John Travolta) and Mittens are the serious characters in the movie who keep the plot moving while Rhino the hamster provides all the laughs and is my favourite character. Rhino is quite hyper and is very excited to meet Bolt (as he is a huge fan) and also wants to help Bolt on his adventure. Penny is voiced by Miley Cyrus which I thought would be a huge disadvantage but she actually did quite well in her role and did not make the film any worse/ less enjoyable.
The Blu-ray makes the disc look very impressive at times especially with situations involving Bolt`s superpowers at the start of the film and the film is very well animated (as all Disney films are) and the computer effects all look very nice.
The film is quite similar to other Disney films and as with all Disney films you know it will have a happy ending and it also works well for children and adults and is great to watch as a family.
***Summary***
Overall this is an excellent Disney film and an enjoyable watch as a family. The best character is Rhino who provides all the laughs and you also get a free Rhino soft toy with the Blu-ray version as well as the standard DVD which means you can watch it wherever you are if you have 1 Blu-ray player and about 5 DVD players! Bolt is quite similar to other Disney movies though and I don`t think is their best animation but it is very good.
***Other Information***
Special features include: Super Rhino Short which is quite funny and the only feature I have watched but the others include deleted scenes, an art gallery (which is exclusive to Blu-ray) , a game (Blu-ray exclusive), Creating the World of Bolt, the voice cast and a music video featuring Miley Cyrus and John Travolta.
Running time: Approximately 96 minutes
Rating: PG (I think it is suitable for all)
4/5 A good animated family film

Wittier by the reel, BOLT is can't-miss family entertainment (Daily Telegraph, 06/05/2009)
[F]risky, funny and inventive enough to engage the attention of grown-ups as well as children [...] What keeps BOLT fresh is an unaffected exuberance, a genuine sense of fun, that is expressed above all through obsessive attention to craft. (New York Times, 06/05/2009)
Tremendously lovable and funny stuff. (The Guardian, 06/05/2009)
Disney’s first 3D animation, made under new head John Lasseter, is a likeable, dynamic and seductively characterised family entertainment. (Time Out, 06/05/2009)
DVD Description
In this 2008 computer-animated Disney film, an adorable dog named Bolt (voiced by John Travolta) has been trained to believe that he has superpowers, and that his young owner, Penny (Miley Cyrus), is in perpetual peril, thanks to the schemes of the dastardly Dr. Calico (Malcolm McDowell). However, the loving and protective Bolt and his human companion are really actors in a popular TV show, a production that goes to great lengths to make sure its star pooch remains in the dark about his fictitious life. When Bolt is accidentally transported off of his show's Hollywood lot, he must find his way back home and contend with his not-so-super reality, aided by a scrappy alley cat (Susie Essman) and a very enthusiastic hamster (Mark Walton).
Helmed by animation vets and first-time feature directors Byron Howard and Chris Williams, BOLT benefits from executive producer John Lasseter's sterling Pixar touch, often echoing themes of that beloved company's canon, particularly 1995's groundbreaking TOY STORY. A fun movie that will delight children, BOLT is excellent family fare and easily one of the finest dog-themed films in cinema history.
