Despite boasting a law degree and some fancy letters to my name, I departed from the hallowed halls of academia with no career waiting for me. Fortunately, University equipped me with discipline, eloquence and enhanced interpersonal skills, meaning I could be a good temp whilst I sought a training contract to be a solicitor.
However, the law career never manifested as temping led me to find my niche as a sales person. A company that liked to recruit University graduates into well-paid sales recruitment roles snapped me up, trained me and put me through an intense objection handling 'boot camp'. I was stretched and challenged to come out of my comfort zone, and subsequent to a multitude of awkward scenarios I found it seemless to manipulate and blag my way into easy money.
Six months later, I decided I wanted more professional edification and left. Nevertheless, when I bought Boiler Room, it brought back fond memories of this job.
* About Boiler Room* Boiler Room follows the character Seth Davis, played by Giovanni Ribisi. Seth has his own home casino business, a vocation which greatly displeases his father who is a high-court judge. In an attempt to obtain respect and recognition from his father, Seth becomes a stockbroker for a ruthless and ambitious firm. However, all is not as it seems, as behind the success, Ferrari's, and mountains of money lurks a disreputable practice that is dragging Seth into a gutter lower than his previous business managed. How will Seth ensure he does not go down with the firm?
*Performances* Unsurprisingly I loved this film. It was easy to relate to the character of Seth, because my introduction to sales mirrored his. Boiler Room manages to epitomise the cut-throat sales organisation mentality of ABC - "Always be closing". The glamour, money and ambition that is attached to sales is accurately conveyed, which makes it a very attractive watch.
Giovanni Ribisi who plays Seth does a magnificent job of playing a character with drive and determination who falls into a job that utilises an unknown talent and develops his niche. He joins the company as a rookie with no sales experience and is taught the techniques of how to manipulate clients and close them, and grows to become a natural shark and subsequently a very successful broker.
Surprisingly, a famous line-up constitutes the supporting cast. A young Ben Affleck and Vin Diesel play cock-sure, financially prosperous and seemingly invincible sales people, that are at the top of their game. Both of them portray their characters convincingly and superbly.
Ron Rifkin, of Alias, plays Seth's dad extremely well. As a high-court judge his expectations are high for his son, and he openly expresses his disappointment that they are not met. Yet you can tell that, deep-down, he is a caring father that wants to tell his son he loves him, but cannot find the liberty to do so.
*Personal thoughts* This film will appeal to a broad audience. Boiler Room conveys a life that many modern men and women would want - glamour, money, fast cars and status. Anyone involved in business, particularly sales and telesales will love this, as would anyone who is a fan of the Apprentice, Dragons Den and Tycoon.
Boiler Room was hardly a blockbuster, despite the formidable names which feature in it, however it is a fast-paced, exciting and fun film to watch, and I fully recommend it.
I bought Boiler Room for the excellent price of £8 on Play.com. The film has a certificate of 15, and a running time of 118 mins.
*Cast*
Giovanni Ribisi ... Seth Davis Vin Diesel ... Chris Varick Nia Long ... Abbie Halpert Nicky Katt ... Greg Weinstein Scott Caan ... Richie O'Flaherty Ron Rifkin ... Judge Marty Davis
Advantages: Hip young soundtrack, hip young cast, The Diesel-Meister Disadvantages: One scene of nasty violence, lots of swearing, storyline a bit predictable
...all you lovely Ciao-ers.
Boiler Room is the story of Seth Davis (Giovanni Ribisi) and his ascent in the world of stocks and shares. I thought it was going to be hard to watch old Giovanni in a serious role and not picture him as Frank Junior, saying ‘I like to melt stuff’. But much credit to him – he is really good in this role and his baby face helps portray the odd innocence of his character.
But on with the story, you cry! ... ...put in the balance…
Boiler Room is really ‘down in the hood’ in a Wall Street kind of way. And speaking of Wall Street (the film), said movie is the JT Marlin trader’s Bible. There is even a scene where four of the traders quote an entire scene of the movie alongside a simultaneous showing of it. The soundtrack is solely rap and urban beats (vibes, flavaz, whatever you wish to call them) and even the score is composed of ...

Advantages: Good performances by young stars, interesting Disadvantages: Sub plot is a bit contrived
The Boiler Room isn't about janitors in a school building. Its about obnoxious, very rich, very dodgy stockbrokers operating in a very dodgy firm nowhere near Wall Street. Seth Davis (Giovanni Ribisi - Saving Private Ryan, The Gift, Phoebe's brother in Friends) heads up a cast of up and coming stars including the next big thing, Vin Diesel (Fast and The Furious, Pitch Black). Ben Affleck also puts in a cameo as a foul mouthed recruiter for the firm.
... ...the fed's show up…..
Boiler Room is a pretty good little film. The young cast put in good performances and although the plot isn't particularly original; its interesting. You may be thinking Wall Street but the film gets there first as one scene shows the brokers watching and quoting the 1987 Oliver Stone film.
It shows the tricks these guys use to hoodwink people out of their money and makes you think that the money would be nice but sod ...

...theme of fast money. So Boiler Room seems to have got everything right. Except it’s forgotten one thing: a plot that goes somewhere…
It begins slickly enough. The aforementioned hip-hop soundtrack kick-starts a pacy introduction to young entrepreneur Seth Davis played with admirable single-mindedness by Giovanni Ribisi. He is a college dropout who uses his downtown house as a 24-hour illegal gambling den for underage punters with nothing ... ...you can’t help feeling that Boiler Room is just trying to be a Wall Street for the next generation. It doesn’t even come close. It’s not worthy even to lick the Chelsea boots or to shine the gold tiepin of Gordon Gecko. Wall Street is still the film of corporate greed, and it will take something a lot more imaginative than Boiler Room to beat it. ...

An underrated and enjoyable film about young Stockbrokers given a fast route to huge financial rewards as a way to fund a shallow lifestyle by a company which seems too good to be true. DVD Description
A supercharged ride through the cutthroat world of illegal stock selling, BOILER ROOM is fueled by an electric hip-hop soundtrack. Ribisi portrays Seth Davis, a college dropout who thinks he's going straight when he takes a job at J.T. Marlin, a stock firm located in Long Island. Seth wants nothing more than to be loved and respected by his father, a revered judge. As he learns the ropes and begins to make waves within the company, he discovers that J.T. Marlin might be a bogus operation after all. A last attempt at redeeming himself threatens to land both him and his father in jail. Younger's film is an adrenaline rush of a motion picture.
