Bruce Jones stars as the "Bob" in question. Night security guard Robert Askew (ie "Bob") finds himself losing control of his life. Night shift is boring so he spends his time trying to learn things from an encyclopedia. He eventually gets fired for playing football with a colleague, by The Boss (Brian Glover).
Bob doesn't get on with his wife or step-daughter very well. Bob goes home from work and finds his wife Brenda (Anna Jaskolka) in bed with another man.
Something inside him snaps. This has been building up for a while. Bob and his work mate Jack (Ricky Tomlinson) had earlier been laughing about ways to commit suicide and the conversation stays in his mind.
He gets into his car and drives towards Blackpool where he plans to leap to his death from a pier. He has a huge breakfast first and then prepares himself for death by buying some new clothes and a set of books so that he can weigh himself down when he jumps into the sea.
However he finds salvation in the form of Angela, a young psychology student (Charlotte Jones) who stops him just in time. Can she really save him in the long term and who is that old woman who tells Bob she will meet him three times in his life? Most of the plot is centered on the two days Bob and Angela spend together.
The film is certainly very surreal. I did laugh at the beginning of the film when the DJ on the radio (voiced by Mark Goodier) is being so cheesy and cheerful. Not want you really want in the morning!
However, there isn't really a great deal of comedy here at all and the idea that someone can "save" you is nice but a bit unlikely. The message that things can and do sometimes get better may be true to an extent but it's a bit twee.
This is kind of "It's A Wonderful Life" for kitchen-sink drama lovers. It's the only way I can describe it but it's not as great at it sounds; the characters aren't particularly engaging even if Bob is quite likeable.
This film got decent reviews on its release and even an award at the London Film Festival but I fail to see how. It's just about watchable, even with the Blackpool setting.
I would recommend watching this next time it's on TV before looking at purchase prices.
Advantages: Will Keep the children entertained for ages Disadvantages: The extras are a little disappointing
Apart from chocolate, eating and sleeping, my son has three loves in his life - namely Thomas the Tank Engine, Scooby Doo and Bob the Builder.
This weekend we decided to watch 'Bob the Builder - Teamwork Challenge'.
The cover of the DVD has the title on and a picture of Bob, Wendy, Roley, Bird and Mr Beasley on the front. Upon opening it, on the right hand side of the case is the DVD. The disc itself is blue and had the title on it, plus a picture of Bob and Wendy. In the background are pictures of tools in a lighter shade of blue. On the left hand side of the case is a small leaflet which tells you what the contents of the DVD are.
The DVD is produced by Hit Entertainment and runs for sixty eight minutes. The rating of this is U, which means it is suitable for everyone, and it was made in 2003. We bought this quite a while ...

Ok - those of you who have previously read any of my reviews will know that my son is an avid Bob the Builder fan. It was only going to be a matter of time before he wanted to watch another one of these DVD's - and on the weekend we reached that time. He picked 'The Knights of Can-A-Lot.'
